You won't get a Great Dane for £400, I'm afraid; you'll need to save up at least double or three times that.
Your best bet is for
your parents to contact the breed clubs to ask for details of reputable breeders. You need to be aware that good breeders try
not to have puppies ready around Christmas because this is the worst possible time for a puppy to change its environment.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it

I think JG is right in saying it is very unlikely you will get a pup for £400 from a reputable breeder.
Looking on the breeders sites on here the rate appears to be £700+.
I'v seen them cheaper elsewhere........but bargepole and not touching come to mind.........

yes - hence my reputable breeder comment!

And if a show career is in mind, then you've got to get the very best.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

Perhaps try great dane rescue for a well adjusted one OR contact some show breeders and see if they are retiring any older ones.
hiya, well i am afraid your rong as the other day we was going to buy a great dane poup that was £400 but we decfided it was too old and it was kc registerd and a good breader!
i have seen a few thta are aropund £400 and a good pedigree, but they are all too far away,or too old! aspose we may pay up to £600 as that is all i would like for x-mas! lol thanks for he reply as well!

Yes, you will find them at all sorts of prices, all sorts of ages, all sorts of colours and from all sorts of breeders who call themselves good. KC reg does not = good, and to know a 'good' pedigree you would need either years of experience in the breed, or an experienced mentor. I would say to you, and to anyone else using this bit of the forum to find a great dane puppy, take the advice as given by JG to find a puppy from a reputable breeder. Take the advice given from the breed clubs and their reputable breeders to ensure the breed is right for you, your home circumstances and your budget, as with the larger dog so is the vet insurance, vet bills, feeding, bedding.....etc etc. Find out what health problems the breed can suffer with, and which health tests the breeder will have done with regard to this. If a puppy is not in your price range, consider a rescue as has been suggested, let them match a dog to your home and circumstances.
Reputable breeders very rarely have puppies ready for Xmas, puppies are not bred to cover Xmas expenses or for Xmas presents.
Now joining MM at the side of the bridge.........:D

Sadly in the UK as in the USA and Canada the vast majority of pedigree pups, and registered ones at that are not bred by reputable breeders, in USA the statistics are a sad 12%, around another 20% bred by puppy farmers, and about 67% by backyard or Casual breeders, the figures for UK are unlikely to be much different.
Many of the latter category are unaware there is anything wrong with the way they are breeding with a lack of knowledge and health screening, often they breed for sentimental reasons or they think they will make some pin money.
With a breed as specialised and hard to rear well the last thing you want is to get a pup from someone who doesn't really know or comprehend the importance of careful nutrition, not overfeeding and not under, being very careful with minerals etc.
Dane pups are a giant breed and it is very easy to ruin the growth of the bones of such breeds by either over or under nutrition, or any nutritional imbalance that would not affect an average breed.
Danes are prone to a condition called Wobblers that in Danes manifests as a narrowing of the Spinal canal, which can lead to paralysis. A good breeder will use mentors of long standing in the breed to research which lines have produced more than average cases and avoid doubling up these individuals in pedigrees.
There are other health tests the parents should have. Not to mention selection of temperamentally sound individuals that are neither nervous or aggressive, probably with health the most important aspects, especially with such a large dog.
Many people who breed know how to talk the talk and seem respectable, but rarely do they come through with the health tests and lifelong support and responsibility for the pups produced.
If you find a breeder through an advert check them out by contacting the breed clubs to find out if they truly do have a good reputation.
I cannot see how a breeder of this breed could do all the correct specialist health tests, show their dogs, pay and travel to the best stud dogs available and rear pups that will eat huge amounts, let alone pay all the other fees and sell the pups at £400, I would expect pups to be double that price.

Sorry I have got to say this:
A good healthy Great Dane would cost more then £400 - £600 from a GOOD responsible breeder.
When taking on such a giant breed such as this, the cost of feeding, insurance and vet bills should be taken into consideration.
Vets fees can be very expensive, and some dog insurance companies prefer the owner of the dog to pay the bill out right before any claim can be settled.
Great Danes have health issues as do nearly all dog breeds so this needs to be researched before buying a pup.
Great Danes are GIANT breed, so will need lots of training, socialisation to enable him/her to be a much loved pet and able to play with other dogs, and not to pull a child over when walking him/her.
Loving you Mika, my boy 12/04/99 - 17/05/07 xx
Will never forget you my darling boy xx

For what it's worth, a Google search would seem to indicate that this poster is for real in her description of herself. I suppose it may not be the case and may also have been a WUM elsewhere, but one person given the benefit of the doubt can't hurt, can it.
To back up what has been said above, you are very unlikely to get a well bred and reared Dane for £400. You could be lucky and get a KC registered black or (non-showable) merle for around £500-£600. If dogs aren't KC registered, there is normally a very good reason that does not include the welfare of the dogs, so these should be avoided.

Why woudl a Black be cheper, they are perfectly acceptable in the showring? Since this year Manltes/Boston marked ones have been included as they are in other countries
Barbara and the Grey Curly Tails.

Because black males are the Devil's own job to sell, Barbara.

As a fan of Black dogs (my first was a Goenendael) I wonder why. Love Black horses two the way their coats gleam and you can see all that muscle rippling.
I know that in rescue kennels in the USA black dogs are almost impossible to home, and where space is short are most likely to be PTS.
Barbara and the Grey Curly Tails.

I think we've had this conversation in various guises before, but yes I also love a nice black male Dane and can't understand why they aren't more popular - particularly as the public seem to love big dark dogs. Tri males in my own breed are also the hardest to sell.
Even before the mantles were accepted for showing, they seemed to sell easily along with the merle mis-marks. Of course, many harlequin breeders kept them at home in the breeding programme, even though they couldn't show them.
As someone with a 20+ year interest in Danes, even though I don't own them, I have for years looked at adverts for those 'stuck' with older puppies - and a large proportion of them will be black males. Particularly good fun for those who don't know their colour genetics and mate a fawn to a blue, expecting the two most saleable colours and ending up with all blacks.

Have yo any idea why there is this colour prejudice. Also have to say I love tricolour too, especially as it appears in Bernese and Hamiltonstovares blanket Tri Beagles where you have rich and plentiful tan. Also why the prejudice in males.
Barbara and the Grey Curly Tails.

No idea, makes no sense to me, but it was ever thus! People would knock your door down in my breed for tri bitches, but have little interest in the dogs.

Makes no sense to me, particularly for breed show homes, as they are the only colour that can be mated to any colour bitch.
Just a theory, but perhaps people either go for the 'different' or fashionable colours (blue merle in the Rough Collie) or harlie family (harlie/merle/mantle) or blues in Danes ... or they expect a dog to look like the 'classic' of its breed (sable in the RC, fawn in the Dane)?
M.
It is better to stay silent and be thought an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Just to add, conversely the merles (which are not showable) are not difficult to sell, but responsible breeders will endorse the pedigrees and sell a little cheaper.

Must admit they do look rather attractive, but can see why the breed do not want to encourage their breeding and include them in their standard.

Please stay on topic
First year of Foundation Degree completed!!

Great-Dane-XX Please read the responces on here and let your family see what everyone has said. £400 for a pedigree dane from an exeptional breeder which shows promise of show quality will be quite expensive.
Also they are expensive to feed etc so thats needs to be taken into considertion.
Also getting one for xmas is not a good idea to introduce a pup into your house at this time. I also think you should do more research into the breed. Maybe you could get to discover dogs in london in a couple of weekends? Trains are easy from Bradford to London (I live in Bradford and regulary catch trains home which go to London

) This will give you more of an idea and you can talk to breeders and owners of Great Danes.
Also contact the breed clubs and generally speak to people in the breed
Also if you want to possibly learn to show then get your pup from a breeder who also shows regually and has some success in the showing. They not only will be able to give you a promising puppy as they know what to look for, but also give you plenty of help with your pup both as a pet and as a show dog

Do enjoy searching, and good things come to those who wait (You wouldn't believe how long I've been waiting to get a toller!!!)

Hi, I have sent you a pvt message hopefully which will make you think before rushing into this!! They are a wonderful breed but just by looking at your reply's it is obvious that you have no real experience of this breed and you really do need to do your homework. I do not intend to be rude or to stop you in your tracks, but the cost and training requirements of this wonderful breed should be put before any burning desire to just rush out and buy a cute puppy. The advise that has been posted on this forum is all valid and none of it is intended to offend, people who post here are passionate about the welfare of our dogs and a true breeder who is true to the breed standard will only breed to improve their particular breed. You will not get a puppy of the desired quality for £400. Sorry to be abrupt but its a fact!!
Remember, You may not have it all together, but together you have it all.

I was similar age to you when I got my first dog.
This was after nearly 2 years of wanting one and doing loads of research!
I also had to wait to grow

as my mum would not let me have a big dog being tiny myself!
I felt passionate about the breed and 15 years later, I still own two of the same breed so I do understand you can be passionate at your age.
However, if that passion is for real it will not go away if you wait for few years and really learn all sides of the breed.
My breed is a giant breed as well, but nothing compared to Great dane(well the girls aren't)!
If you wish to have my honest answer, I think if it is a male you are after just the size might be too much to handle!
I looked after a male Great Dane few years after already having 2 of my own breed and lot of experience of different breeds (and I was fully grown myself:) ) and I have to say I found just the size and sillyness of a young male Great Dane hard to handle at times.
I would happily walk my two dogs and be in total control BUT this Dane on his own made me feel out of control at times!
The dog I looked after was a nice dog, no behavioural problems or anything but having energetic, young, leggy, bouncy dog in the end of my lead was much more hard work than my two ever!
Have you ever considered trying to find somebody with Great Danes, somebody that might be willing to let you help and handle the dogs and you could learn from?
Not necessarily a breeder, maybe somebody who is passionate about the breed just like you are

Yes I do know what it's like when you want a certain type of dog. I have wanted a toller since I was 11 years old, I'm now 19 and still don't own one. You really do have to be patient. You really do need to do your research on ANY breed. Rushing into things normally does end in tears. Also is your whole family ready to open their ouse up to a giant breed with all it's slobber, mess, hair etc?
Are you willing to clean the dog and clear up poo?
Who's going to walk the dog at night? you would be too young so your mum or dad will have to be willing to walk the dog with you morning and night aswell as during the day.
Also what are you going to do after you finish school? One reason I never got my toller is I knew by 17/18 I was planning on moving to uni and unable to have a dog their. Think long term, your so young and a dane will be living for 7/8 years I think on average roughly.
How old are you great-dane-xx?
~Kate~
A tactless person says what everyone else is thinking

Ktee, OP has already been "warned" about posting her age. Nor do I think that is an appropriate question to ask someone on a forum.
Well you're the one who kept saying "you're so young",so i gathered you knew her age

She could be 10,16 or 19,obviously the grammar cant be matched with the age nowadays!
Has anyone warned you not to reveal your age? Which you have done on many occasions. You're still but a kid..
But whatever, i wont ask again if it's such a huge deal.Besides i would rather hear from the parents to take this whole thing seriously.
~Kate~

Yes for safety reasons she was asked to not post her age, as this is a public forum.

.Besides i would rather hear from the parents to take this whole thing seriously.
My thoughts too. At least the posts can be of interest to them, if they actually get to see them, and anyone else looking for a Dane. Maybe the OP could get her parents online to speak to us?

Ice queen, at 19, is an adult.
Regarding questions of age, the site
kidscape says:
Do not give out personal information
Give yourself an alias that doesn't give out anything about your
age, gender or location (my emphasis).
It's unwise for youngsters to reveal their age on the internet, and unfair to enquire.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

Thanks JG...I was about to go and tell my parents I'm still a kid and surely I should then still be living at home with them paying my way (food, clothes etc etc etc) :D Not allowed out after a certain time and under no circumstances be crueling back to my house at 10 am on a saturday morning... :D
hi evryone,thanks for the replys!
i am greatfull for you being so concerned, but in the end it is up to my parents, and can i just say that i would be taking it out for walks iina morning and afternoon and night!
i am not too younge, olso there is a field at the side of where i live!
and i dont have to worry baiout school,as i get home schooled, becauase of peopkle picking on me!
and i only get home schooled monday, tuesday and fridaqy and that is for 1 and a half hourse each day!
my mum is going to strt teaching me at home anyway i think!
as i feel i can not return to school!
even thhoow i have a LOT OF CONFIDENCE NOW,I JUST COULDENT GO THRWEW ALL THE PAIN AGIAN!
I UNDERSTAND THAT A DOG IS FOR LIFE!
I WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HIM!
I WIL CLEEN HIS POO UP(IF I CAN MANAGE WITHOIUT TAKEN A BIG SPADE WITH ME!)
AND I WOULD LOVE TO GROOM AND PLAY AND WASH MY DOG!
I AM NOT JUST A SILLY KID!
I FEEL VERY STRONGLEY ABOUT GRETA DANES AND ANY OTHER DOG!
I NO I HAVE TO EB PAICENT!
TO BE HONEST AT THE MOMENT I HAVE A 11 MONTH OLD SISTER AND I WOULDENT WORRY ABOUT THE DANE AROUND HER AS THEY ARE SUCH GENTLE GIANTS!
BUT I DONT THINK MY MUM WANTS A ANY DOG AT THE MOMENT!
AS SHE IS STILL SUFFERING WITH DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY WHICH SHE IS ON TABLETS FOR!
I GUESE IF I WAITE THEN THE BEST WILL COME!

A young lady and many women would not be strong enough to control a young adult Dane.
Also they may be gentle but clumsy and great care needs to be taken when having them around toddlers. their wagging tails for a start can injure a child's face or even blind them.
There is or was a member on this site with two Great Danes and Young children and she did need to take especial care.
Have you actually spent any time with Great Danes in their homes and out and about, just getting them down a pavement in among other people and dogs can be quite a task as they are physically so large.
Good luck with your research, it may be that you will have to wait until you are in a position to have a Dane yourself once you have your own home. As it is by the time you have the Dane trained you will be off leaving home for Uni or whatever, so it needs to be your parents that want the dog, as in effect it will be theri dog not yours, as you will be unable to commit to it for life, unless you paln to be living at hoem for the next 10 years or so, and even then you are likely to be at College or Work.
