Hi Everyone,
I am trying to buy a Pattedale terrier -smooth coated black bitch puppy to 1 year old as a pet rather than a working dog-though she will live practically on a large London common & have 2/3 good walks a day with plenty of play & attention in between (owner works from home).
Any suggestions of reputable breeders would be much appreciatedconfused

your best bet would be to buy a paper called the countrymans weekly although thinking about it maybe not as most people only breed patterdales to work and ive never seen an ad for patterdale pups where their parents dont work and as its not a breed  recognised by the kennel club i dont know where you could look for information about good breeders of that breed
2 border terriers, 1 russell and 1 belgian malinois

countrymans weekly is your best bet....but my experience of the breed would tell you that if you are thinking of letting it off lead on a common then youll probably only own it for a short time!cool

And if it is Clapham common which is crisscrossed into small pieces by busy roads, under the wheeels of a car.

That is my old stomping ground and I would never walk any independent ranging kind of dog on Clapham common, just totally open onto main roads.

I have a mongrel who is partially patterdale and she is trouble enough. I know a few patterdales and they are very hard work. I don't know of any breeders however when you do get your pup I would really suggest whistle training from the start along with clicker training. Good luck and enjoy your puppy when you get him or her.

Hi

No help in finding a breeder I am afraid.  Most people who breed the working strain are not happy about them going to pet homes.  You will find them in the yellow papers but it is unlikely that any health checks have been done or indeed any thought given to the lines used.  I am the proud owner of a Patterdale from working stock and have to disagree with some of the comments made about the breed in general.  Emma is  a Grade 7 Agility Dog as his her half sister.  They are both reliable on and off lead.  On a walk Emma does love to sniff in the bushes looking for rabbits and she will chase if I do not call her off fast enough.  Having said this I have put a lot of work into her since she was baby the same as you would with any dog.  If you get a Patterdale treat it as a dog, train it as a dog and you will have a great companion for life.  It may be worth looking at http://www.terrierrescue.co.uk/

I wouldn't take any dog loose on Clapham common, no matter how reliable.
