I am looking for a healthy SBT bitch pup, KC registered, with 5 gen certificate. I'd like a blue pup, but am not prepared to pay the higher prices just because of the colour. Mother and father will ideally be available to meet.
try rescues there are hundreds
I don't think that is what the poster was looking for!
Have you tried contacting the breed club?

I would love to take in a rescue dog, but I already have a beautiful Staffie girl and an elderly Boxer, so the best chance I have got is to bring in a puppy.

I have got plenty of time to wait for the right pup. I currently have an absolutely beautiful red staff, which I waited quite a while for, and boy was it worth the wait!!! So rushing into things and throwing money away for the sake of it is not something I am about to do.

If the breeder of your Red staff is a reputable caring breeder then going to them would be my advice, not necessarily to have another of theirs but breeders network and they are bound to know who may have or be planning the kind of pup you are after.

Search under the bred category on the main site and look for breed clubs, a list of these is also available on the Kennel club breed standard page here:
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/87You are quite right in taking the utmost care in sourcing a puppy as so many are being bred haphazardly without the breeds welfare or health and temperament in mind.
Sadly there are many in rescues especially crosses.

Its unreal - the reason I have been given for these inflated prices is that they want to make sure the puppy goes to a good home, because only people with a thousand pounds to spare will treat a puppy right, apparently. The same breeder told me she didnt think the puppy was worth any more than any other colour. Why charge it then???
I have been told to stay away from Blues with yellow eyes - these are frowned upon. Any comments on this?

The real reason for the inflated prices is simple- GREED!!!!
if you take a look at the breed standard the eye colour should be as dark as possible -
there are breeds costing more than blue staffords and they still end up in rescue so again thats another crap excuse.........
a decent breeder will charge the going rate regardless of colour OR sex

What would you say is the current going rate?

I would say for a well bred stafford who has had all the health tests done (L2 and HC) that £500-£600 is the average price
IMO £500-£600 is far too much to pay for a staff every one says that border terrier pups fetch £450-£500 each but you try selling them for that no dog is worth that amount of money no matter how well bred etc they are
i love border terriers

Actually that is the going rate for my breed which is quite a lot less than similar breeds. People in breeds that used to be about £100 more than my breed are now expecting to pay £200 more.
In my breed the puppy farmed onces are really about the same price in the UK as good breeders charge.
In other breeds the price varies considerably based on area of the country and reputation of the kennel in well bred circles and even more wildly among the poorly bred and unregistered stock.
The breed clubs should give you an idea of what the current fair range of prices is.
Thankfully in my breed we tend to stick to the same price give or take £50.
I would certainly expect to easily pay £450 for a Border Terrier pup from the kind of breeder I would approach.

no dog is worth that amount of money no matter how well bred etc they are It all depends on what you want doesn't it. I bought a puppy earlier this year in a breed that goes for £800 - regardless of being for pet or show. I was happy to pay the price asked because, along with the puppy, I am getting years and years of very knowledgable experience with the breeder always on hand to help out with any problems/questions I may have. The parents, grand parents, etc have all been health tested and shown and they have the 'type' I wanted. When I bred my last litter
10 years ago (different breed) I charged £500 a puppy, again, regardless of pet or show.
People don't have to spend a fortune on a dog as purely a pet - but if you have a pet (and to me they ARE still pets) that you want to show at the very highest level and maybe breed on from, then paying top whack for an exceptional puppy isn't such a bad thing IMO.

It's all relative,to breed a healthy, well bred litter costs money. The people just pumping out pups from untested, unregistered, unshown stock don't have the same expenses so can offer them alot cheaper in the free ads etc.You would expect to pay at least £600 for a well bred Boxer and much more in rarer breeds. This is a breakdown of how much it costs to rear a litter of Boxers (it's American though so obviously some points don't apply like cropping)...
http://www.bellcrestboxers.com/littercost.htmlI would be very wary of anyone offering pups for less than the going rate.
In the breeds I have you're looking at around £550-650 for a well bred pup at current rates.
Dorain is a Very Lucky Boy. And I am a Very Lucky Girl.

Have you never bought a well bred dog from show parents Hayley123? I would say thats an average price for most breeds, some are a lot more and some (like collies) may be less. The last time I bought a borzoi pup was 6 1/2 years ago and he was £400 then, another one bought a few years before that was £1000 - although he was 8 months old with a champ show best puppy in breed already. You may think £500-600 is a lot for the staffs/irish staffs/anysortofbullbreedcross you see advertised in the local paper, but then you get what you pay for
