Hello, I was just wondering if you fine knowledgable people could help me. My CKCS is currently fed J&J's chicken & rice dry food. She has an extremely sensitive stomach - she had bloody mucus stools from an inflamation when my parents gave her chicken, ribeye steak & prawns as treats, & we went through God knows how many brands of food until we came to J&Js when it all seemed to end.

I buy J&Js from my local supermarket (I know that as a rule of thumb, supermarket brands are to be avoided) but upon researching this it was the same if not slightly better than Burns or JWB - the two I had heard recommended time & again. However, my local supermarket has stopped selling the smaller packs for the larger ones & bumped up the price so I was now thinking it might be worth having a food delivered if I am going to have to buy such big bags regardless & was wondering what quality brands there are that you might recommend. I am on a slight budget, this food is about £2.70 a kilo so around that would be fine by me. Just in case you do not know what Joe & Jacks is like here's the ingredients:

It's labelled as hypoallergenic with no colours, preservatives or artificial flavours.

I think that there are only two supermarkets that sells Joe and Jacks isn't there?  I might try my dog on it if I happen to see it but we don't shop at Sainsburys or the other one that sells it.  Joe(from vets in practice) is registered on another forum that I use and it does seem a good food from what he says.

I don't know if there are two. I buy it from Sainsburys! It is a good food, absolutely, despite it getting poor reviews online. I think it got 2 stars.

Anna you couldnt pm me the addy of the forum? I would like to ask him why he and other manufactures add so much rice/cereal compared to meat,other than cost i cant think of a good reason.

Naturediet Lite may well suit her as this is a food that is very good for dogs with Collitis. I tried mant foods until I came across this for my old Lab who suffered very badly and the difference in her was amazing

Autarky would ahve similar meat and cereal content though they do use maize, but have a lot of herbs that helped my girl with her indigestion.  thsi one can be bought in Jollyes and horse feed merchants.

Many people I know with dogs with problem digestion use the Lamb formula.

Arden Grange is great for delivery too. I buy direct and it shows up next day, 2 days max. They'll leave it in the back garden/ by the door if you're out too. I pay £28 for 15kg plus 2.95 for delivery.

well they are often the ones missing in our processed diets so yes, there are no unnecessary additives, just useful ones.

One of my dogs had a digestive problem and Arden Grange Lamb & Rice sorted it out.  It is a great price for the quality of the food, there is no VAT on it if you buy direct, I think they manage to do that as they are registered as a working dog business.

If you want a trial run Waitrose sell it in small bags.

I still love Burns food.  My main reason: the phosphorus levels which are quite low.  Phosphorus levels which are too high are not good for the kidneys. Plus my dogs have had no problem on Burns.  I do however, feed Burns in the mornings and Naturediet in the evenings - always in their various Kongs so it is an enjoyable experience.  They also have the odd home cooked meal when I have the time.  This diet is supplemented by Fish for Dogs sea jerky and a little salmon oil.  They also share a bag of Tescos steamed vegetables in the evening and have a little fruit every now and again.  If I buy apples, Maisie helps herself to them - I buy those little bags of red 'children's' apples for her.  This diet seems to work very well for them both and they are both in excellent condition.  For treats when they are out, they get tiny pieces of cooked chicken breast.  One of their favourite cooked meals is salmon (fillet) with sweet potato and steamed vegetables and this is very easy to prepare.  Just microwave all the ingredients (separately) and mash them together.  They love it and you can do it as part of a larger family meal.  Tesco's healthy eating salmon is wild, pacific salmon and very reasonable.
