Here's one for all you reet dead posh 'uns.

At what stage do men cease being master and become mister? Al (who is quite posh himself, says 18), but I once had an even posher boyfriend who when I was going out with him said to address his letters to Master X, as it drove his mother nuts when things were wrongly addressed. And he was 20.

Please can you settle the mind of a common northern lass.

Ta muchly.

they stop being Master when you stop playing "role play" games ;-)

on a more serious note a search of the web found this :

The traditional set of such titles includes Mr/Mr. for men, Mrs/Mrs. for married women, Miss for girls and unmarried women, and Master for boys.

Didin't say when the cut off point is - 21 ??

You're playing the wrong sort of games. You want the ones where he does all the cleaning and calls you "Mistress" ;-)

I would say , without a shadow of a doubt , at 18 a boy should cease being a Master and be titled Mister. 18 is the age of consent and the legal age of being a Grown Up :-)

Posh is as posh does ;-)

My oldest son was 6'3 at 18 and would have beenhighly miffed if anyone addressed him as Master :D

As to ettiquette however .......I don't know 'cos I ain't posh

:D

I would have thought so too. But his mother was adamant that he was still "Master". She did also vet his girlfriends for their accents, if they were too common they were not allowed into the house :D

The minimum legal age for getting married in England and Wales, is 16 years old with parental consent. You would be a Mr then :-) Age of Consent is 16 too.

It depends if the young man is still in his Father's home, if he is he is Master until it is embarrassing to call him such 25 ish - If he has set up his own establishment (home) he is Mister. Jackie H

Most of the young men I know think they are "mister" at the age of thirteen:rolleyes: they've been there seen it designed the t-shirt and know it all - bless 'em - oh the joy of youth:D

In Reply to: Is he a Mister or Master? posted by Karen on April 28, 19102 at 15:12:11:

Boys are given the title of Master until they are of school age...7 years old.

They have no title until they turn 18 when they are called Mr.

Nyah Nyah :D

No offence. But isn't that an american site eek

As they have dodgy spelling, I'm not sure I'd trust their etiquette :D

Here we go again!
I love my dodgy spelling! And in America, we don't face these horrid problems of how to properly adress a child or young adult. Tiresome business if you ask me (yawning...).

That's true. No more worrying about how to address a duchess or whether your hemline is that half an inch too short at Henley :p
