Our new baby is being fed a dried complete food and tripe mixed in, where would I get tripe from and should I continue it for a while or will he be ok with the dried food only?

I'd imagine your new baby will not be that keen on plain biscuit after having tripe, it may be best to get a couple of blocks in to keep him eating in the chageover period. I always think you should leave it a week or two at least till you change a new pups food

As LJS has said you can buy the little blocks from pets at home, think they're around 60 - 70p. I've no idea how much a cav would eat but no more than a pack a day anyway (and your other boy would probably like some of that). It's frozen, I usually leave it for about 12 hours to defrost in a sealed tub to avoid any smell. I find the PAH stuff isn't that bad anyway

We don't have PAH here (Channel Islands), would it be something I could get at a pet shop?

What exactly is tripe?

I wouldn't change his food as we had this problem last time with our boy who we changed (slowly of course ) and he has never had a great appetite but this little man apparently has a great appetite so fingers crossed

yes it is possible to buy it from a pet shop but i dont know if they sell it in the channel islands. tripe i think is a cows stomach but one of the ones that only has grass in it not digested food you can get lamb/sheep tripe too but it stinks more and is more slimy that cows or bullocks

i own 4 14lb terriers and each of them have half a lb of tripe a day and 50g of arden grange. i get tripe in 1lb blocks but some come in 2lb bags. if you plan on feeding it for a couple of weeks you would need a seperate freezer

Is tinned tripe similar?

Not really but if you bag it in more bags you can get away with it in your freezer in a seperate drawer.  Tip defrost in a closed tupperware container, that will only be used for that purpose,a dnt ehn feed him outside if you can

Do you get the daily press? As somebody advertises occasionally in the 'fur and feather' section. I will keep an eye on it and let you klnow if it's there.

I fed Ebba on tripe and complete when I got her to feed her up.
I tried both the blocks and the free flow.
The blocks I used to keep in a carrier bag in the normal food freezer. Never smelt it, it was fine and wouldnt hesitate doing that again.
Whereas the Free flowe stuff, I ccouldnt bare iot. It STANK even before I opened the bag, and had to put it in 4 carrier bags before I would put it in my freezer and then thats where it stayed for ages as didnt want to touch it!!!! And this is me who used to feed 30 odd dogs Raw tripe straight from the abatoire!!!!
So I would stick to the blocks
Oh and I am sure they are not 60p each. They are cheaper than that

it depends on what weight bag you have i think we pay about £14 for a box of 40lb but where we used to get it it was 32p lb but came in 2lb bags so was 64p a bag (minced) if you buy a whole tripe its cheaper theres on average 18lb per whole tripe and a whole tripe costs about £3.50 depending on where you get it i prefer whole tripe to minced as minced smells horrible i think compared to whole. at least if you buy whole and cut it up yourself you know whats happened to it

Not from our local pets at home they're not. I buy from Redcastle and have tripe delivered to the door in a refrigerated van for 48p per pound bag. If I run out and buy it at PAH it's 67p per lb :rolleyes:  I used to buy it from Landywoods and it was much cheaper, but not nearly as good and was always defrosted and bleeding all over the car by the time I got it home, so now I pay more for Redcastles and avoid the bio hazard :D

Not sure if you have been asked this already but prize choice deliver to the door quite cheaply.  Perhaps you could even share a delivery depending where you are.

For dogs your size I'd get the free-flow. You can take the small amount you need out and leave the rest frozen. I used to just use a twisty-tie to close the bag then put that in a grocery bag and the freezer never smelled. You could call Prize Choice and see if they have a stockist in the channel islands. They do deliver but have  £50 minimum for orders - which is a lot of meat. They're very friendly; if you explain the situation they might include a couple bags for you if they already have a customer in your delivery zone.

If you can't find frozen and you're desparate Butchers tinned do a tripe version. I can buy it at any grocery store here. Better than a poke in the eye?..

Tripe at the butcher if available will be bleached and washed of the green  which is the healthy part for the dogs.

An abattoir is where you could get tripe, but don't know if they can now sell direct to the public.

I would ring the local abattoir and ask.

Get the phone book out and good luck.  I would hope the breeder will have got him used to some complete food as most breeders know that the new owners may not wish to feed raw.

just go with the natures menu frozen, its only minced meat with veg, it will be better than tinned stuff.

I will get some of the frozen stuff tomorrow, the breeder is sending him with some of his complete food so now we just need the weather!

If you buy tripe from the butchers or abbatoir, it'll be whole tripe which you will have to cut into small enough pieces for a CKCS puppy which I doubt you'd want to do.

I'm always a bit icky about giving tripe to a puppy as my first bitch suffered from growth plate problems by the time she was 6 months old, she was fed tripe as part of her diet and it's imbalanced between phosporous & calcium (Being higher in the former) which you don't want for a pup.   She  was x-rayed which showed low bone density and put onto a complete food only & calcium tablets everyday.
