Poppy my 4 month old Border Terrier has developed a lump on her back.I thought it was an insect bite at first but it is too big for that.It's like a boil but without a head.It doesn't bother her at all even when I touch it.I've been dabbing it with Tea Tree Oil which was recommended to me and it seems to be hardening.I'll take Poppy to the vet if it doesn't improve in a couple of days but I wondered if anyone else had had a similar problem and could give me any advice.The lump is oin her hip area by the way.

Hi My border collie had a small lump on her side when she was younger I got it checked out by the vet who said it was nothing to worry about just fatty tissue that did eventually just shrink away sounds very similar to you dogs but better get it checked just to be sure:D Gillian

Hi Sue.
This may be an abcess, get her to your vet, she will need it draining, if she were mine, I would burst the head to release the puss, but I can't be sure thats what your dog has, so I wouldn't attempt it. Anti-biotics may also be in order. Let us know how she goes.

Hudson was taken to the vet last week as he had a lump on his side ..Vet looked at it and just said it is a cyst and will go down . It has already begun to shrink - thank goodness.

Hi someone told me that if you bathe the fatty lumps/cysts with salt water liberally they shrink them. I agree tea tree is fantastic but in this instance I might be tempted to give the salt water a go!

Sorry Iv'e taken so long to reply but Iv'e only just found out for sure what Poppy's lump was. The vet said it was probably a canine histiocytosis which is a benign kind of skin cancer! Of course we were horrified especially when the vet went on to say there was a slight chance it could be malignant! She said it was very unusual in a Border Terrier especially one as young as Poppy. I had to take her to have it removed the next day and it was sent off to be tested. We had to wait a week for the results and it was benign which as you can imagine was a huge relief. Poppy had to have 7 stitches and has got a large area where she was shaved but apart from that she's fine. I'd just like to add that I had a bill for £167 so I was so glad I had just taken out insurance!

Hello im glad everything worked out ok for you, well apart from the big dent to the pocket but arnt they worth it anyway, i have to take my dog to the vers tommorrow, i hope i can come back on here and say all is well, i hope it doesnt break the bank, but what the hell if it does as long as my rosie is ok, thats all that matters, Sheryl
