After following lots of posts on here, i would like to try Fred on some meat from the butchers, i.e. chicken wings/bone etc.
Advice please.....he is a min.poodle so not very big. How many wings would he eat? What is the best type of bone to get?  Sorry if this is a silly question but i really have no idea so would appreciate some recommendations.

Are you going to be feeding totally raw or supplementing his current diet ?

Supplementing his diet. Want to feed him raw "treats"

Taking into consideration his size just one or two wings at the most

I would keep an eye on his waistline and if he seems to be putting on weight then reduce the amount and frequency you give him. iIwouldn't suggest cutting down his normal food as this is the balanced part of his diet and only complete raw feeding can really provide him with all his dietary needs

Thanks for that. so how often would be OK to give him wings? Also any thoughts on a raw bone? Keep those ideas coming thick and fast people!!! 

I think it also depends on your butcher. Mine is great, I just ask for what he has left and often get them for nothing or next to nothing depending on what he has. I've found no problems with anything for my lot, turkey necks go down a treat, and they love a knuckle bone, but this is supervised!! They sometimes get carried away

You can give just about any bone,your butcher will be able to cut them down to poodle size.

Some idea's:

Marrow bones
ox tail
Briskett bones
Lamb breast (ribs)
Pork ribs
Beef knuckle bone

Depending on how well your butcher is stocked,there are loads more different bones you could try,but the above are the most commonly found.

Hi, yes would like to try him with a bone as well. Didn't know what type to go for so thank you - you've answered my question. The problem is i have a crush on my butcher so as soon as i walk in the shop i get all tongue tied and forget what i'm there for. There's no way i could just have a conversation so at least now i know exactly what i want to ask for!!
With the chicken wings...do i need to hold them for him(someone told me once you should) or can i just give it to him to take away and munch on by himself?? x

My mother has a min. poodle (about 9 months old now). He enjoys his chicken wings, takes him ages to eat one, he always chews his food really well, bless him. When he comes to mine I usually give him a lamb rib to munch on and he absolutely loves those. Before I started buying my meat in bulk I used to get lap of lamb from the local butcher. It's not very expensive and was a firm favourite.

very true Astarte. I'd vonsider myself quite an outgoing confident person but when i see him i just get all stupid. I've like him since we were at high school & i left nearly 6 years ago!!! Will pluck up the courage and go tommorow t get some nice treats for the weekend for my boy. Thanks for the advice.x

Just a quick word of caution - if your dog is not used to having marrow bones I would scoop out some of the marrow before you give it to him or he could end up with a dire rear as it is quite rich. Start off with just a little bit left in that he has to work hard at to liberate 

Sorry to steal your thread, Are these all given completeky raw? Are they meant to eat the bone? (Yes I really don't know lol)

Recreational bones such as marrow bones are for chewing on but most dogs would not be able to consume them - they are very hard and care should be taken as they can chip or break a tooth on them. Bones such as chicken wings, turkey necks, lamb breast etc completely disappear in no time

My dogs are raw fed and eat raw meat twice a day every day Some of the posters on this forum raise their litters on raw food and if you have a search you will find lots of threads on raw feeding and bones which are very informative.

our lot love them! really good for their teeth, plus they can spend hours trying to get the marrow out (ours hold them upright and kinda roll up their tongues). watch your carpets though, it can get a bit messy when they are fresh.

If it is the first time of feeding raw then I would hold the tip of the wing to ensure that he learns to CHEW and doesn't attempt to swallow in two mouthfuls and then promptly regurgitate!  All dogs are different, but some are so excited at having raw that they do try to gulp it down whole.  Just hold the first wing and watch and see and take it from there.
