I am looking for top class show quality labrador retriever puppy (yellow) to purchase. Preferably, from parents who were Crufts winners.

Parents winning at Crufts is no different from them winning classes at any other show. Hopefully the parents would be consistently successful at shows.

When looking for a "Show Prospect" dog there are many factors that should come into you making your decisions and the show successes of the parents are only one.

There are no guarantees that a puppy will come on as expected and you are unlikely to be fortunate enough to obtain a top drawer puppy (bitch especially) unless you have been on a waiting list or at least have some expeience in the breed.

Your best bet is to contact the breed club and ask their advice.

I have been told there is a lab champ show in Cardiff this weekend.  It's worth going to as many show as possible to get an idea whats out there.  Buy a catalogue, watch the show and get an idea what you like.  You can then contact the breeder which normally have all the contacted details printed in the catalogue.  I hope you find what you are lloking for.

That's right there is, there is also a Breed Club open show which should be well attended the following week in Worcester

Why not contact the owners of Lab bitches that won at Crufts last year, or even better come over this year, there is bound to be a huge entry of the breed.

How do you think they got there? Certainly not by indiscriminite breeding I hope

I can't imagine that anyone who has bred a dog qualified for Crufts would do anything less than at least hip score and eye test their dogs ...............now I know alot won't have elbow scored or optigen test( although I do believe this is becoming more popular now ) and afterall, the KC do only recommend hip and eye testing, the other tests if done, are just a bonus.

That's a bit like saying everyone showing dogs at Crufts are dog lovers!

Sadly in the dog world as in the world in general nothing can be assumed, some things are good indicators but no guarantee where people are concerned.  Ah now I know why I prefer my dogs :D

I'm quite sure that not all of them love their dog and in fact some only use them as a means to an end, fame, money, ego stroking.
There are plenty of poor dogs out there who never see the light of day, stacked up in crates and not allowed free excercise - to protect their precious coats. Plenty of dogs have 'trained tails' ...just watch them on their triangle.. a dog with an incorrect tail carriage 'encouraged' to carry it in the right position.  I've seen some awful things suffered by dogs at the hands of show people.I've reported disgruntled owners who I've seen giving their dog a thump if they haven't won and recently a couple who really belted a toy dog who'd been chucked out of it's class for what they called 'playing them up'. They hit it so hard I heard the air forced from it's lungs.

Over the years certain 'names' in dogs have been raided by the authorities, only to be found to be keeping 40 odd other dogs in barbaric conditions, yet their show dog may look fabulous.
There are many many reputable and kind people showing their dogs at Crufts but to assume that because they happen to have a quality dog means that they 'love' it - is unfortunately not always so. Perhaps you're just not as jaded as I am after all these years.

I have only been showing my dogs for 2 years.
Qualified both for crufts last year, my home bred dog got best puppy in a champ show. I am proud of both of them. They are not world beaters, but that is not what I set to do.
I am going to crufts again this year with my 2 dogs, I love them both. Obviously I would be ecstatic to win a class but would be more than happy to be placed.
I have noticed a clique in the breed, but that is not a problem as far as i am concerned. I contratulate them on their wins, whether that be on merit or not.
I am not an old hand at the game and pity anybody that has lost the fun aspect in the pursuit of winning.

Best attitude to have.  I have shown typical exhibits that never won much, being happy to get a good place in top half of a large class, and have also had a measure of success making up champions.  Have even had a memorable win and a low place at the same show with same exhibit :D

If it was about winning then I would not have bothered for the first 7 years in my breed. :D

Each mile stone has been a pleasure.  The first prize card of any kind, the first red card at an Open show, the first one at champ show, the first BPIB/BOB, group placings.

Still plenty I haven't had, a BIS or BPIS at Open or above, a champ show group, breed club BIS.  Plenty to motivate me for years to come on the showing front.  I still enjoy just taking part, even if my exhibit is unlikely to win.

Sorry Jo reputable was the wrong word to use. What I meant is that to get a top quality dog by going round crufts and picking one out of the huge numbers would be a minefield especially if you were a novice

To be honest, I think anybody would find it almost impossible to buy in a puppy that would win like a Crufts winner Most breeders would obviously keep the best in the litter for themselves, sometimes keeping up to half the litter to see how they develop

toolz, I live in a bubble where I assume everyone loves their dogs just like I do I don't like to think of the other side of the coin

No Jo it makes me sick to think of what goes on....... but it's hard to ignore it if you see it with your own eyes.

You can be lucky though - my boy was sold by someone who mostly keeps tricolour bitches, so she sold a first-time dog owner a blenheim dog, who then got a CC and 2 Firsts at Crufts in his prime. So it can happen, but no, not often I imagine!! And even my girl, her breeder wanted a b/t so let me have the tri bitch, and she's done well at open level.

The bitch which won the ticket at Crufts last year has just had a litter. I think there is one yellow dog left.
