It is my friends babys' christening at the weekend and I have no idea what to buy him, having never been to one before. Can anyone tell me the sort of thing one buys?
Thanks in anticipation of some helpful answers!

Not had this myself but what about anything with his/her name on - door plaques, things like that.
Or Beatrix Potter bowls, plates etc. This is apprarently the type of thing I got given for mine (all those many moons ago

)

Think something that will be there for him when he is adult, don't mean a woman, but a small piece of jewellery, engraved pewter mug, can't think of anything else suppose it depends how much cash is available but I think the baby will not know now but when older may get pleasure to know you gave this gift when he was christened. Enjoy the day. Just thought how about a photo album, not just of him but all his relitives who may well be gone by the time he is adult, you could not give it on the day but the album with a promise to fill it with photos as and when you take them. If you look in the Index and Argos catalogues they have some ideas:) They also have some plaster plates that you make yourself and put the baby's handprints on. Or an identity bracelet or my favourite- a ring- they can wear this on a chain/necklace when they're older:)

When my 2 were born, they were given a collection of coins that were in use at the time, and it came in a little presentation folder. I think they were bought at the Post Office, and I seem to think they were not that expensive because the value of our coins is not that great.I don't know if the P.O. still do them, but it would make a nice gift and 'heirloom' as the coins should have this years date on them...the Golden Jubilee

If your friends are into country pursuits like yourself. maybe a stirrup cup or a hip flask, suitably engraved with the new babes name.

My son got a lovely pair of engraved cuff-links for his christening - he may never wear them - but they are very nice and have great sentimental value. A pewter cup is a very traditional gift as is setting up some form of savings fund. It largely depends on the relationship you have with the baby. A crate of good quality port is a traditional gift that is "laid down" for the coming of age.
We once bought an antique silver spoon for a friends baby. They really liked it as it was something totally original next to all the other stuff they got which is often duplicated if you go to Argos or Smiths Jewellers - I've got four Peter Rabbit mugs!!! and only two kids - my boy has two of the same money box. My daughter got a beautiful antique silver dressing table set for hers. She'll never use it but it is so beautiful - she'll never part with it either.
To prevent possible duplication - steer away from your high street chain stores and look in the small old fashioned independant type jeweller shops that type of thing especially those that sell antique items. Something nice and orginal is always appreciated by parents.

excellent ideas from every one, thank you. I only have 4 days so engraving may be tricky, but I like the idea of an engraved hip flask or silver cup. Luckily no high street stores for 40 miles so have to make do with the metopolis we call Okehampton!!!
Off to try & find a hip flask now!
Many thanks again & if anyone has any further ideas I am still open to suggestions as I can't get to the town until tomorrow afternoon.

Some of the gifts that were given to my parents at my Christening were suitable for a baby and are consequently in the loft.
Some, however, were lovely antique objects or pictures of my parents when they were younger.
And these are the ones I have with me now.
Doesn't matter what they are. It's the thought.
x Okehampton is probably one of the best places to look!

Bet you don't get to Okey much!!!!

Thanks everyone....I got a really nice pewter hip flask and had his name engraved on it......hopefully he will treasure it in future years when he is out with the hounds, rod or gun.
