Could any one suggest how many days early an early whelping breed might be?
Just getting a little excited with due date of 2 weeks today and dont want to keep bothering the breeder.

Puppies born a week early would be viable, any earlier and they would be unlikely to survive.

Yep, I've had a few have their pups 7 days early with no problems.
My dogs aren't my whole life, but my life wouldn't be whole without them. 05/01/08 11 stone 12 lbs

Same experience as others, I have had several bitches whelp one week early with no problems at all.  Last year I had a girl go into labour 10 days early, none survived and it was so upsetting.  I felt so sorry for the bitch, as she had so much milk.
The hurrier I go - the behinder I get!

Most of mine have their pups from 5 to 2 days before the due date by first mating.  In my breed most bitches whelp at 61 or 62 days post mating, they also tend to be mated later in their seasons than many breeds so maybe this makes ti appear they are in whelp for a shorter time than if they were mated at day 12 rather than day 15?.

That's a good point, Brainless.

My girl was mated on day 13 and 15, and whelped on day 60. All the pups were fine, thrived in fact.

Four days?! Eeek!

Im assuming your taking the 'due date' as 63 days from the first mating? So four days over would take her to 67 days. Hmmm might be worth giving the vet a call and see if they want to take her in. I should imagine they would want to see her either way.

After all, better to be safe than sorry! :-)

hi, i had a miniature dachshund go 4 days over her due date from first mating, and like your bitch she was fine in herself, eating playing etc.. However decided to get everything checked at the vets. Basically my vet said because she was only having 2 puppies her body hadnt produced enough of the hormone to start her off in labour. she ended up having a c-section and had 2 live puppies.

My last litter was born (naturally) on day 68 from the first mating (66 from the second). All were fine.

Oh gosh. It does happen occasionally , I would be panicking though. It doesn't happen in my breed.

Hi Karen,
Buy 'The Book of bitches' it's great, it's my bible!!!!!!!!!!!
From one mating 63 days is usual. They say 58 to 65 days.
I sleep down stairs from 59 days till they arrive.
Good Luck :-)

LOL
The last thing I would do....breed.
However, I am awaiting the arrival of a litter in the hope there is a bitch for me! Safely in the hands of the breeder of my current boy. The due date is a week Saturday but the breed is apparently notorious for early whelping.
Just a tad excited here.
thanks all
Karen :-)

Hi,
Soz thought you were the breeder and waiting for a litter to arrive. But your waiting for your new puppy to arrive.
No wonder your excited.
Why not give the breeder your mobile number, she may send you a picture when they arrive.
I've done this for someone, they became great frinds of mine.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a beautiful bitch. Bet you've got all fingers and toes crossed.
Let us know please :-)

Does it not all depend when they actually concieved!

People seem to go from first mating, as they should before anyone gets at me!

But here the sceince - They can concieve up to 48 hours after mating as the spern stays alive for up to 48 hours. So if there has been two matings 2 days apart they could have concieved any time from first mating to 48 hours after second mating. Then you end up with a discrepency of 5 days - making it fine to go four days over depending on when they concieved.

I usually only do one mating - for that reason.
Sorry about the science :-)
Good Luck hayley - Let us know

Actually the sperm of a healthy dog can survive for about a week but in good condition for about 4 or 5 days.  It is the bitches eggs that have a shorter shelf life of about 2 days once ripened.

Of course - and everything could have been delayed with this litter, because the matings didn't take place till days 18 and 20 of her season! Of course conception wouldn't necessarily have happened on the day of mating, but the gestation time charts take that into account. ;-)

Oh yes thats for sure!
They  were born yesterday so we do have a long wait. Three in the litter so the breeder is having a fun time without quite as much trouble as could be possible. As will be the same for you too I suppose, many more means lots more work...

Karen :-)
