I suppose this comes under the topic of feeding although she's helping herself

I have an 11 year old Tibetan who keeps helping herself to dd's spinach in the veg patch.  Whilst I know humans are able to eat raw spinach & the dog herself isn't suffering any side effects (well I have noticed her turning into Popeye yet) just wondered if anyone else's dogs ate spinach?

I gave up growing carrots years ago because her son used to wait until they were ready & then dig 'em all up, let's hope she doesn't start on the cauliflowers next

Yes I give my lot whizzed up spinach but not too much as makes their bums a bit smelly !

I was advised by the vet to give my first GSD raw spinach in with his food to help with his illness, - it worked.

Can I ask what illness your dog had?  The only reason for asking is that this bitch tends to find her own herbal remedies.  Two years ago she spent as much as the day as possible eating the roots of grass (not the grass just the roots) it was then I discovered she had bladder stones (for the 3rd time even whilst on special diet).  Just wondered if she was self medicating on raw spinach?

Zigi started having panic attacks caused by sharp/loud noises when he was about 2yrs, all he wanted to do was get in his crate (home) or into the car (out) - even if it meant carting me straight across a road etc. 2 vets decided - after consulting with a prof at Cambs vet school - that he had a nonfunctioing parathyroid which caused a very low blood calcium level which caused problems with nervous system and extreme noise sensativity.
He was put onto Collo-cal D and blood tests every few weeks to monitor levels, when I started adding spinach to his feed we could cut collocal by more than half the dose. Weird but it worked. he was on this till we lost him at nearly 9 to CDRM.

Oxalic acid can interfere with calcium absorption; so don't feed too much of Spinach as the latter can trigger oxalate bladder stones.

Spinach is good for health generally if you do not feed in excess or have a dog which is predisposed or suffers from bladder stones.

Now that's incredibly interesting as she suffers from bladder stones so this is making it worse (she's obviously only been doing this recently so it wasn't the cause of the bladder stones).  I thought perhaps she was deficient in something & that was why she was eating it.

Oh well better pick all the spinach & make the kids eat it then

Which particular type of stone was she suffering from? One of my dogs had urate stones, which require a different preventive diet than struvite stones, for example. Oxalate stones are different again.

To be honest I can't remember as she's had two different sorts I'm sure the second time it was oxalate.  All were to do with her calcium intake & they put her on U/D diet (which she absolutely hated & eventually it gave her the runs, in fact if I feed her the same diet for more than 4 weeks at a time she gets the runs).  We made the decision that we would not force her to have a miserable existence on the diet as she has a heart murmer, chronic bronchitis & these stones every 18 months or so.  Last time she had the stones removed she became allergic to the stitches & had to have them removed & redone under GA, not funny at 11 years of age.  At the moment (touching loads of wood) she is as fit as a flea running around with my Spanish girl & she's even been out over the fields in the last fortnight with the labs (although she does like me to lift her over the styles these days )
