I have recently recieved a large bag of Canidae dry dog food from germany(i think). It is well within its use by date but smells rancid to me.I wonder if any other users can advise me on how it should smell.None of my dogs LOVE it which is annoying as i did so much research into the best kibble available.
Cheers

You might have to go to an American based site for this one,as i dont think anyone here feeds Canidae, which by the way is a great food and should not smell rancid.I would get in touch with the company. Also check for any air holes in the bag,a tiny pin prick will be enough to turn a food off.
Have you looked into Orijen or Timberwolf? http://www.zooplus.co.uk

Gosh,Orijen and timberwolf are very expensive.Canidae from cats country is quite a bit cheaper, even with shipping.

they are expensive but very good products, if your looking for something a little cheaper, try nutro. Thats what my dogs are on at the moment and my fussy standard poodle seems to enjoy it.

Thanks.I emailed cats country and told them my problem and they're sending me a new bag of Canidae.

I use Canidae, and it does have a funny smell.  ETA: it smells like rancid vegie oil

But it is wonderful, and makes coats real nice.  Also, I find that I have to feed less, because it is more nutrient balanced then some other foods, so she is fuller longer on it.

But I will take the smell of Canidae over the smell of the Venison Wellness food any day!!!  (if you dont know, the wellness venison food, smells like puppy poo!!!!!  Accidentally left a bag open in my closet, oh the smell went on all my clothes!!!  UGH)

I'm being sent a new bag and if the smell is the same as the other bag then i am wrong and i'll have a hellavalot of Canidae to get through.I have small dogs and already one big bag is too much.If so,if any canidae feeders would like a bag for free except postage then you are welcome. If i keep both huge bags then some will certainly be rancid by the time they are both finished.

You can put them in the freezer. In seperate bags, enough for maybe a week of feeding or so, and take out as needed.

Just an idea

Why bother with Canidae?  In terms of ingredients it is not an better than products made here in the U.K. like Arden Grange or JWB?
By LucyLu (*) [gb] Date 20.02.08 22:40 GMT
To me the ingredients in Canidae look far better then jwb or arden grange without a doubt.
By dvnbiker (***) Date 20.02.08 23:02 GMT
can someone post lists of both foods for comparison
By LucyLu (*) [gb] Date 20.02.08 23:34 GMT
I'm very new to computer world and i'm in awe of you lot who put links into your posts.I could type all the ingredients out using my one tyoing finger but it would take a long time.

Canidae looks very similar to AG,the only off putting thing about AG is the maize, but other than that... I'm not sure what the % of meat is in Canidae.

yep looks very similar but the good thing about AG is the addition of glucosamine and chrondroitin.
By Crespin (***) [ca] Date 21.02.08 12:31 GMT
I like Canidae because it seems to be a helper in coats.  Having a breed which is prone to skin problems, it seems to help her skin and coat.  To give it an extra boost, and to help thyroid as well, I use Holistic Blends SeaGreens on top of her food, once every other day.

I also like, that Canidae is a bit cheaper than your other "so called" premium foods.  I pay $10.99 for a 5lb bag pf Canidae (which last my dog a month and a bit) compared to $17.99 for Proplan, which I found not so good, yet everyone uses Proplan here (well for the most part anyways).

Canidae is also a natural, holistic food, compared to the other foods available on the market.

Kory, you live in Canada, you should be feeding Orijen :-D

>yet everyone uses Proplan here (well for the most part anyways).

Blah,nowhere near a premium food!

>the good thing about AG is the addition of glucosamine and chrondroitin.

I wonder how much though? It's so far down the list,as it is with most foods that i would say that it is included in minuscule amounts, and nowhere near enough for therapeutic benefits.

Checked out the site, and it sounds ok. Have to wonder though, since of course the products site is going to say its the best pet food out there.

Will ask around for peoples opinion on it.  I have had so much issue with foods and my bitch (sensitive stomach) and thats a lot of fish in there, something she doesnt get a lot of.

And I also wonder, when it says human grade, whether they are still using the leftovers from what humans wont eat on a human grade meat.  Watched a very interesting show, called a Dogs Breakfast, which explored the pet food market, and how the food is made, and what they use, etc.

But, I will ask around.  I feel leary about changing again, since I only changed a while ago, to Canidae.  But have seen fantastic results with the food.
