I took a stud booking for my boy who is at limited stud, had a call bitch is on day 1, great
The next day had a call from an owner of a bitch he mated who missed, in season, day 1, 4 weeks early
How would you handle this ? Got 2 bitches due for mating one on day 2 and one on day 3 !
sorry but what do you mean by mating on day 2 and 3? mating is from about day 10-14 for most bitches. as long as he has 24 hours rest he should have no probs mating both
I mean one is on day 2 and one is on day 3 now

One might be ready for mating on day 10 and the other on day 15.
Are the bitches being checked for ovulation? And are they both clear for STDs?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it
One has had swabs taken just waiting for results and the other is maiden. Not being checked for ovulation although I will use a draminski on them.
He hasn't been used at stud for 5 months and is in great condition, my main worry is mating two bitches so close together - not something I would normally do

I can understand your concerns Lydia, completely taking the fertility/health factors out of the picture, you still have to think it's two litters of puppies at once that you will be partly resonsible for - that's a lot of pups if anything goes wrong.

Yes it is a huge responsibility, not something I take lightly, and really don't know what to do. Don't want to let either party down both have waited a long time to use him and obviously have a duty to the bitch that missed, but also have a duty to make sure he is in tip top conditon which he is at the moment but will he be if he mates two bitches as close together as maybe 24/48 hours ?!? Why does nothing ever run smoothly !

The bitches may both be ready to mate on the same day

or you could have a week between them. I think I would let both owners know and ask them both to do the swab tests. That way they both are prepared. As the sperm can last a few days I would hope that even leaving a mating a day or two wouldn't be too much to ask. Alternately you could ask if either would be prepared to wait until next season, depending on the ages of the bitches.
Edited to add: As some stud dogs mate more than once to the same bitch during that season I don't see that it would be too much for him

He'll think that all birthdays have come at once
Life is not a bed of roses but a comedy of errors
Yes will ring them both and explain the situation, ask for swabs to be done and see if either will wait.
How long does it take for the sperm to recover? Will see if the new bitch will wait until next season, if not maybe I won't take a stud fee just incase the sperm is weakened until a litter is confirmed

On this occasion if both are having 2 matings you could mate them alternative days. I would certainly be asking the owner of the bitch who missed before to do premate testing from day 9-10 as her days may have been out last time and hence she missed. It would be good if the other bitch could be premate tested also but of course it wouldn't be fair to insist.

A healthy dog will be fine mating althernative days.
What kind of swab are your going to ask to have done? For ovulation?

For infection I thought - will use the draminski for ovulation
EDIT Just seen your post about having premate done on bitch that missed, will ring and speak to them, good idea

No real need for swabs on maiden bitch either IMHO and I personally prefer Premate to smear cytology slides.

Just my opinion
Thanks Blue, going to speak to them both later. So do you think 24 hours is enough for sperm to recover, if of course they are that close together ! The next stud booking he has is towards the end of the year so he will have a long enough break. I'm thinking 4 days of mating may be a bit much for him !

Hi Lydia,
It isnt of course something I would condone doing on a regular basis but a young fit healthy dog will be fine. Doing this I would make sure both bitches had 2 matings 48 hours apart.
I personally have used two dogs ( not my own but paid studs for my girls) in similar circumstances and both had puppies no problem and breed average litters.
Oh crikey me neither, like I said was 5 months ago he was used and not due to be used again until the end of the year. Will see if I can't put one of them off for another 6 months I'm hoping when I explain the situation they will be more than willing to wait
Thanks again for your help
Lydia
Bit of a moral dilemma here , who do you give priority to! IMHO it must be to the original user of your dog , providing they are prepared to do the pre-mate, as you have already had their money. When the situation is explained to the new user they may well decide to use a second choice of dog rather than risk their bitch missing too.Sperm does need time to recover and should the worst happen and they are both ready together , chances are both of them will miss and before you know it your boy has a reputation for firing blanks !!! I speak from experience....lol
Yes priority will be with the original dog, I will speak to the other owner and give her the choice. If she wants to take the risk I won't take any stud fee until a litter is confirmed. Can't see them using another dog, they have waited a long time to use mine, think they will either take a risk or wait.
Thanks for all the advice
as you have already had their moneyI am not for one minute saying that the new stud enquiry takes importance over the free repeat , however the bitch missing to a proven healthy expereinced dog isn't the dogs fault though or in all likeness it isn't. If 2 successful matings have been provided from a healthy dog the stud dog owner can't do much more. Just the terminology " you have already had their money" is probably not quite right

Remember it is the bitch owners responsibility to bring the bitch on the correct days.
Even if they were both ready almost at the same time ( baring in mine it is nearly impossible to tell EXACT ovulation without daily testing 24 hour apart) matings from a healthy dog medically should have no impact on success.
before you know it your boy has a reputation for firing blanks !!! I speak from experience....lol
Actually if a dog mated 2 bitches alternate days , two matings each and they two bitches missed then I would questions is viability anyway not because of the matings being close but because medically/physically, (and it had been studied) there should be more than enough sperm for healthy matings. I just want to add though I am not talking morally here but physically as morally I do have thoughts on stud usage control etc. I am just talking mearly medically. I to would put my missed bitch as the priority AS LONG AS premate was undertaking

I went to a stud talk in January and the dog actually only uses half of his total in one mating and therefore does not use all of his sperm in one mating so there should be no worries. As she put it, the reservoir is being topped up all the time. In fact she says the second lot (from the reservoir) is actually the best lot as the first contains some debris. She says she would prefer to go to a stud dog that was used the day before than to a stud dog that hasn't been used for a while.
The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

We were under the impression of maiden bitches not really needing a swab until one of our maiden bitches had a weird season , took her for a swab and she has Beta that could have been picked up anywhere.I would swab anyway.
