Has anyone tried the above food? Got a sample tin at Crufts and tried it on the dogs today...they loved it but seems it is not easy to get hold of.

It carries this feeding recommendation, "Please note: since Applaws is a natural product, it may have an unbalanced calcium/phosphorus ratio with an above-average phosphorus content. Thus Applaws should be complemented with a well-balanced complete food (moist or dry)." 

I wouldn't mind giving as a treat now and again but I don't think my bank balance would stretch to this everyday plus a good quality main. The website picture is a rice with chunks of chicken and veg, not mushed up like a lot of tinned food. I have looked in my local pet shops and haven't seen it.

I've used the cat version (that was available first) -although could NEVER afford to pay those prices. The cat food was basically pure meat that I could have put on a plate for my husband and he'd never have realised it was pet food! It saved the life of a cat of mine as she was very ill and would not eat, and Applaws was so good it got her eating again. For that reason I have a few tins at home, for emergencies only. It's the most expensive pet food I have EVER heard of! It would literally cost several pounds a day to feed one cat, so  daren't even think what it would cost to feed a large dog.

Yes, should have explained! Mine have Arden Grange usually with about 1/4 tin Butchers mixed in to make it tasty so I would only use 1 or 2 tins between 5 dogs as a nice treat! The ingredients are Chicken about 70%, water and rice (only 2 or 3%) Good to have as a standby food incase you had an inappetant dog (or cat) and didn't have frozen chicken in the freezer.
I did actually try a tiny bit and it was very tasty!!

I also got a free sample at Crufts. When speaking to me the lady on the stand said that it was stocked at Pets at Home.

I feed this to my cats, but recently bought several tins of the dog version as they were doing the buy 2 tins, get 1 free. It's terribly expensive, works out a £1 a tin & you get so little of it anyway, you end up giving one dog a full tin mixed with biscuits! Of course they love it but way too expensive to feed on a daily basis. I get mine from Northwest Discount Petfoods, you can also buy it from www.mpmproducts.co. uk  Northwest does 48 tins for £45...they also do free delivery over a certain amount.        

That's true, last nights tin had pieces of chicken with peas & carrots, we could have had it in a pie......LOL 

Marrianne......i buy 48 tins at a time for the cats & don't even dare tell my other half how much i pay for it...........LOL They love the chicken breast & the chicken & cheese, plus the tuna & prawns. In fact, i was very tempted to try one of the prawns once, it looked as good as any we eat....     

I think there's a couple of things about Applaws and similar products coming in from Italy (I think) and that is firstly that, yes they are very expensive unless you have a miniature breed (check out http://www.pet-food-choice.co.uk/pet_feeding_costs.htm for a comparison of feeding costs for various foods over a year), and secondly that they don't seem to be complete foods because they are so high in protein and just don't seem to be balanced. I guess they're best used as a treat or topper on normal food if a pet's not showing much interest in the regular food. Trouble is, in my experience if you go down that route they then won't touch anything unless it's coated with tuna or similar!
Having said all that we do seem to be seeing more foods appearing with ingredients that resemble 'food' rather than waste products so that con't be a bad thing, I guess ;¬)

i had a free sample from crufts also - on reading how much i should give my small dog it would work out very expensive indeed & i have 5 dogs (not all small). i gave a taster to my fuss pot who didnt want her dinner (even with tripe on it) and it got her very interested - she loved it and it got her to eat the rest of her dinner. i have already made the mistake of adding things to food to make her eat so i agree with above post that once you start its hard to stop.

it does look very tasty though, and i will look out for it to have as back up when madam is on her hunger strike!

A 156g tin costs just shy of £1.00 (normally 99p).  If you look at the instructions, they recommend that one 156g tin is enough for the average sized cat split into two meals.  The food is virtually pure meat with no unecessary fillers so you do not need that much and neither of my cats is exactly wasting away. 

Still extremely expensive though -would cost me almost £32 a day LOL!! It's 75 % meat, I feed HiLife (once a day, the other meal is RC) which is 65 or 70 % depending on variety (again nothing added at all, it's just the moisture that takes away from the percentage -obviously there can never be 100 %), and that costs me 48 p per 400 g tin.

I think both hilife and applaws are for complimentary feeding only,neither are balanced as far as i can tell. I think you get what you pay for in this case,hilife is made in Thailand...... and has colours,sugars(glucose) and flavours added.Applaws is just plain meat,water and rice,and no nasties.

where can you buy applaws ? my cats are fed dry and they used to get a bit of tinned food every day but they are turning their noses up at it, even stuff like pilchards, thought they might like to try something new.

The only thing that I would say about applaws is my concern about the taurne content for the tuna and fish based variety - taurine is listed on the chicken variety (see their website).  I would tend to feed it as a complimentary food as much as I would love to give it to them all the time because I think, ingredients wise it is excellent.  You can get it ordered direct from their website (just google 'applaws').  Another good cat food is Nature's Menu, but Tesco Luxury (not premium - just the same old meat and animal derivatives) or Tesco finest are really good too.  Tesco finest in identical to applaws and about the same price.  Tesco luxury is a bit meatier and preferred  by of my cats who hates applaws!

No there is no rice in Applaws CAT food. Yes I always feed wet in the morning and dried in the evening, as that's what most cats do best on -never had one that was used to being on just wet or just dried.

Yes we're down to that from 35.  So Applaws would never be an option LOL.

Oh my goodness!!  Tesco Luxury is £3.69 for 12 pouches.  Would that be better?

Does it matter which way round you feed wet and dry? I give my cat dry in the morning and wet in the evening.
