Arghhhhh!

Another enquiry asking "Do you have any toy/tea-cup/miniature puppies for sale?"

Infuriating! This was the enquiry....

Hello,

I am currently looking for a black female toy (t-cup) p** puppy and was wondering if you would be able to help?

Thank you

S*****

My reply was....

Hi S*****,

All p**s are 'toy' p**s, being that there is only one standard size (between 6.5kg-8kg). I will have a litter of blacks in (edit so as not to advertise!), these will be of standard size. Please be aware of breeders offering tea cup/'toy'/miniature p**s, these will be the runt of the litter. With runts you may well get all sorts of health problems. Please do be aware of this.
P**s are the largest of the toy group, you will never get a dinky chihuahua sized p**. Even the smallest baby p** will grow into an averaged sized adult.
I'm just offering you a friendly warning not to be ripped off by unscrupulous breeders. If a p** isnt KC registered, even if the breeder is telling you they are pedigree, dont pay more than £500. For a KC  registered p** dont pay more than £1000 (for either a dog or a bitch). I wouldnt pay more than £1000 unless the parents were both show dogs at champion level, from champion stock.
Also beware of scams offering pups from america/other countries that are going for just a couple of hundred pounds, these will be scams and they will take your money but you wont recieve your pup.
I hope this will help you in your search for a puppy and make you aware of scams and second rate breeders.

Best wishes

I hope she takes my reply as an informative responce and not get all hot-headed over it (as I have had before). It just irks me somewhat when uneducated, unaware people enquire about some daft 'type' they've got wind of and want.

Does anyone else get this?

Annoys me to.  Pom's are between 3 and 7 lbs anyway so how much smaller do you want them?  Unfortunately in America many toy breeds seem massive, look at the Osbourne's Pomeranian's so in reality the proper sized Pomeranian's are actually what the American's class as teacups etc.

not with mine, doubt you'd get a toy bully lol, but i just wanted to say your reply was really good. warning and imformative but not ranty at all (as i'm sure you were tempted- i know i would be)

Haha yes Astarte I was sorely tempted to get on my soap box!

Unfortunately there does seem to be plenty of people out there looking for 'tea-cup' breeds. Frightening!

I have had people out on walks ask if my dogs were miniature or puppy bullmastiffs, also if pugs come from mastiffs. Hilarious! I try my hardest not to laugh out loud.... ;-)

hehehe, but they've curly tails! and a wiggly bum walk! lol, silly people.

must say we nearly had a mini bully once, after a wee accident between one of my aunties frenchies and one of her bullies we kept one of the pups, Corrie. she stated as a brindle mini bully (about half sized) but then one ear stuck up...then the other...face got more compressed looking...ended up looking like a mad gremlin :-)

Very good reply - as a groomer I find a lot of people thinking their correct sized Yorkie is a 'teacup' and so on. Mind you, whatever your p**'s, are, they can't be the biggest toys as that's a Cavalier surely! Not that it matters for the purposes of your reply - I've never had enquiries for teacup Cavs thank goodness. :-D

Saw an ad yesterday, for a toy breed (The Smallest toy breed) £4,000... She was worth this due to her small size??!!!!! I'm not going to rant, i'm in a good mood and i know we all feel the same on this topic!!

Shocking.
Are people so gulible?????
Agree more money then sense. Do they not realise, there are breed standards for a reason. If too small or too big, ITS A FAULT, not an excuse to ask rediculous amounts of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not as yet, but if I got a quire for tea cup puppy, I think i would reply, no not now or ever, I breed for correct temperament and type.

"Unfortunately in America many toy breeds seem massive, look at the Osbourne's Pomeranian's so in reality the proper sized Pomeranian's are actually what the American's class as teacups etc. "

That's because the Osbournes choose to buy their dogs and cats from pet stores, not reputable breeders.  And pet stores and "backyard" breeders are more common in the U.S. than here in the UK - hence what you get with any breed tends to stray way off the standard.

I get enquires for smaller dogs.  Mine are idealy between 11-11.5inches high at withers.  But people always want small ones.  I had people also ask me for an oversized pup, since they loved the Doberman, but didnt have the room for a Doberman.  ARG, that also makes me mad.  (firstly wanting an oversized one on purpose, but thinking that it would be more like the Dobe because its taller.)

Mind you, there still has to be buyers for undersized or oversized pups.  But to intentionally breed them, thats silly.  Sometimes I will have a pup that is 10 inches tall at maturity, or one that is 12 inches, but I dont go breed them purposely.

Did you suggest they get a German Pincher instead.  I think the problem is few people know there are the breeds out there to suit everyone knowing just a dozen or so breeds.

I have had the opposite, people email me for larger size, a litter i had last year some one emailed me and asked the size of mum and dad, i told them mum is 15inches and dad is 14 1/2 inches, they replied back that they were looking for a pup that will be bigger and grow to around 18-20 inches, i replied that breed standard is 14-16 inches so they might find it hard to find a kc reg well bred 18-20 inch dog, i dont understand some people if you want a larger dog then look for a different breed that does grow to that height.
By Crespin (****) [ca] Date 19.03.08 14:23 GMT
I mention the three Pinscher breeds, the Min Pin, the German, and the Dobe, with the looks being very similar.  The German Pinscher is not a breed that has much support over here, only a couple breeders within all of Canada.  But yes, I do mention the German Pinscher whent they want an oversized min pin.  Unless for some reason I do have a larger one for placement, but usually that only makes them usually around 13 inches at maturity, not anything  close to what they mean by "larger"

There is no such thing as a Toy Yorkie, they are a toy breed, nothing special about the word 'toy' being used.
By Brainless (Moderator) [gb] Date 04.04.08 11:12 GMT
Just to clarify there are many over sized Yorkies being bred which makes people think the correct standard size are toy or miniature, but what is really happening is that many so called Yorkshire Terriers are so far from breed standard in their breeding to be barely recognisable as to breed.

here is the Kennel club breed standard: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/199
under size it says:
Size
Weight up to 3.2 kgs (7 lbs).
