A few people have said that when you get a puppy (male) and you have a male dog already that it can lead to them fighting over whos ground it is, and am just concerned that when we get our new Pug puppy, he may have trouble with my male pug who is 4yrs old.
Is this true? and what should i do to help if so?

shouldn't be to much of a problem with the puppy, but when he hits the teenage years it might get a bit interesting... the puppies unlikely to challange the adult but when your pups hitting maturity it could well become an issue and theres really no way of knowing now if it will.

I had 3 males at one time. 2 GSDs and a CKC cross. We lost our long haired GSD to cancer several years ago when he was 7yrs old. My other GSD passed away April last year. He would have been 13yrs old in August. We still have our CKC cross and he is 10 yrs old this year and we also have a female GSD who is 12 months old. All male dogs got on really well together without any problems. Our 1st GSD was a little bit jealous when we first introduced our 2nd GSD and he did nip him (not a bite) when he thought our backs were turned, however we corrected him for this by telling him no and that he was naughty  and then ignoring him so he knew he had done wrong. There were no further instances of this and we made sure that our 1st GSD had plenty of fuss and attention so that he knew he wasnt being replaced. He was also very easy to read and he would frown and stare if he was upset at something, but a quick and stern "oi" would ensure that there was no follow up. So all dogs lived harmoniously but it is a matter of being able to read your dogs and if you think there could be something brewing to nip it in the bud. Also I would ensure if I gave them treats or their food I always gave them in order of my 1st GSD, then 2nd GSd, then CKC so they always knew their pecking order.

With a good age gap like you have unless the breed tends toward same sex intolerance you should not have a problem.

By the time then youngster reaches and age where he might get a bit cocky the older one is mature enough to be secure in his higher position, and the youngster is unlikely to challenge him for no reason.

the main reason for male disputes would be the presence of an entire bitch, especially if she is or is due/has been in season.

Also introducing an adolescent or adult male to an existing male can cause problems, but a young pup will hero worship his companion and know his place.

Our Goldie boy was 6 when we introduced our Dane puppy who's also male.
Baillie has always been a soft lump, and although I never thought he'd challenge
the Dane for "top dog" .. I followed all the suggestions and advice offered.
I introduced them at my brothers, so as not to intimidate Baillie in his own garden so to
speak. I made sure that I was seen to be tending to Baillie first, and what have you ..

But to be honest, it's never presented any real problems. Maybe with hindsight, I'd have done it
before Baillie was 6 .. I think Baillie just wants a quiet life, none of them have ever seemed
to challenge each other for top dog spot ... although saying that Diesel does think every toy
does belong to him .....

I've some really lovely pics n stuff with Diesel on his hind legs leaning on Baillie when he was a
baby, and now he can stand and look over the top of our 6ft garden fence .. and Baillie can
just wander underneath him ... They are best friends though .. They're now 11 and 5 ...

I'm sure that's not the case with some dogs, just my experience with two dogs,
