By pinkbrady (**) [gb] Date 24.03.08 10:42 GMT
Raisins definately are! I'm not sure about garlic though.

Raisins yes, but i give my dogs garlic on a small scale to help keep mites away like they do with horses xx

Rasins are a big no no.Some dogs can tolerate a few, some have big problem less than 7 can cause toxicity. It causes acute renal failure.Initial signs of toxicity are vomiting and diaorreah and dogs have died.So best to keep them well away.Avoid grapes as well.Garlic is fine. Each of my dogs have 1 garlic capsules each evening as it helps with flea prevention, though still have frontline each 3 months.

i have seen dogs die of rainsin toxicity, can cause them to go into renal failure, not very nice! garlic is small doses is fine, are you maybe thinking of onion? that cannot be given to dogs as is poisonous.

Stupid question but can the capsules be the odourless sort or not in order to keep mites and fleas away, or is it the smell emitted from the garlic that keeps them away and so the odourless ones wouldn't work?
Another day, another lesson learned :-)

Odourless garlic capsules are "modified"garlic having the "smell"removed, I much prefer the unmodified garlic & if using them so treat ear infections only the smelly ones work. You can get them on the Net BTW

Hi,my brood have the odourless pearl type capsules - all o.ked by the vet.I just buy the cheap ones from Asda or Tesco's and they have one each evening. They also have cod liver oil.The 2 older ones have oil of primrose as they have had problems with hot spots which seem to have improved. My young lad has soft ears and he has 1 Glucosamine each day.Hopefully they will perk upa bit.

Onion and garlic are the same family of plants.

i know, that was the point i was trying to make, just re read my post and didnt make that clear. some people get confused because they hear onion is bad and then they wonder about garlic.
