My bitch whelped on Wednesday - I have been giving her rice and white fish but she still has very runny poo (liquid).  As she is so hungry with 8 pups I can't starve her so today I have given her a little of her food (Arden Grange Prestige) just to see whether that makes any difference.  She did eat a lot of the placentas so that may have made it this bad.  In previous litters my girls have been okay after a couple of days.  Any suggestions - is it safe to add Kaolin to her food (as I would normally).  She doesn't seem unwell and is contented with her babies and they are ok.  Just a bit worried that it seems everything that goes in is coming out as liquid.  She is going about 4 times a day.

5 days after whelping is not good for her to be having the runs 4 times a day. I think that you should contact your vet.

My girl has always been solid practically the next day after eating all the after births and then having goats milk in the morning and evening, so I would say that there is something not right here.

Continue with the fish and chicken with rice to help to bind her, make sure she is having plenty to drink and just get in touch with your vet, glad that the pups are ok, but if she has an infection you don't want it passing onto the pups, so please just get her checked over, the runs 4 times a day is no good at all.

I agree, I let my girls have all the placentas and they are never loose, bit soft and dark motions for the first day or two, but then pretty normal but of course they poo a lot more as they are very soon on ad lib feeding equating to about four times their normal food.

Thank you for the advice - I will call the vets in the morning.

I had a bitch with the same problem at the beginning of the year. When I took her to the vet on day 4, I had been giving Protexin once a day.  The vet said it was fine and wouldn't hurt the pups.  She just told me to change it to 3 times a day.  Cleared up really fast.
The hurrier I go - the behinder I get!
