You should try asking Puglet - she was used as the teaser bitch for a collection, and was so annoyed at being "sniffed suggestively" so to speak, that she bit the vet, the nurse, and whilst we were rolling about laughing, escaped the surgery and bit a completel stranger in the corridor!  (Puglet is a very, very small and wobbly pug, so thankfully no one was scared, damaged or upset by the attacks!)  However, to answer this more clinically I don't think the open forum is altogether appropriate, bearing in mind can be read by children.  PM and I can go into more technical detail.

Without going into details, a teaser bitch is not always necessary.  I've had samples taken from 3 of my boys and 2 were done without a bitch in sight - very obliging and nice tempered boys :-)

Absolutely, but does depend on the dog - we were asked to take a teaser when we took Englebert, but the Teaser did not agree ;-)

same way as you get a human one, except assistance is required due to paws.

hope thats suitably vague for the forum...

And the dog isn't given the benefit of magazines :D, though bitch pheremones can be used instead of a teaser.

oh god, its not the idea that distresses me, but the magazines just make it nasty... lol, wonder what would be in the dog version

Smells, hence the development of the pheromone sprays.  they are commonly used in the USA where a lot more AI is done with canines.

I wanted the owner of an older dog who had missed to my younger bitch tested before trying him again, but the Vet was unwilling to get the sample.  they suggested she get it herself and bring it in.  this is I wanted the viability tested to see if he was firing blanks, so not a lot of use.  the second bitch also missed so the dog has never been used again, a shame, but sadly in his youth there were no suitable bitches for him (too closely related), but a generation on it was a different matter.

thats a real shame. i suppose it must happen though, esp with such a numerically small breed

Yep there ahve been many males who have never sired litters as by the tiem they were given the opportunity they couldn't get the hang of it or were infertile.

On the other hand a male I bred was used at 6 1/2, as he happened to fit in with the bitch, adn has sired four more litters, he is now 9 years old and I expect won't be used again, but has produced a nice sound son, which has been used, so may be of use to me in another generation, but too close for now as his Mum is half sister to my Lexi.
