Oh Dear....

Just seen a litter advertised on line:  Dobermann/ Rottweiler Cross - ad states 3/4 Rottweiler 1/4 Dobermann! 

What is it about cross breeding that people dont understand? 

One parent Full rottie, the other rottie cross doberman. So the cross makes sense,3/4 rottie 1/4 dobe just forgot the word MONGREL!!!!! :D

No it says "5 adorable puppys looking for new homes. 3/4 rottys 1/4 dobie".  No mention of rottie cross dobie -must be looking on diff sites and i agree - still a mongrel. ha ha

I could never figure out thoses adds that had similar claims either ...lol...

I know ha ha - I suppose the point i am trying to make is its a cross breed not 1/5 this 2/8 this ......

That is the way you describe this kind of cross - in this case a 2nd generation cross on one parent.  Giving an example using horses, where this type of classificaiton is common, you often see ads for "Quarter Thoughorbred" or even "seven eighth Thoroughbred", along with things like "Threequarter Welsh, Quarter Arab".
Going back to dogs, you might find a mongrel who is, say, Quarter Corgi, Quarter Dachshund, Half Shelti,  mated back to a Shelti it's progeny would be Threequarter Shelti, Eighth Corgi, Eighth Dachsi.  (OF course, still a mongrel )

yeah but this add said rott/dobe cross - then said 3/4 rot, 1/4 dobe - no mention of the sire or dam being cross - one would have thought purebred by the initial add - does that make sense?  If my JRT mated my dobe it would be 50/50 not 75/25.

No, it seems very straight forward to me, they ARE Rott/Dobe cross, just not 50/50.  By putting the 3/4 &1/4 it means they are making it clear one parent is itself a 50/50 cross, the other a rott.

Ahhh i get it now ...the 3/4 being of the same breed  the 1/4 being the cross with the other breed

Sorry, doesn't make sense to me. Rott/Dobe tells me these are crossbreeds, 3/4 and 1/4 tells me that one parent also has to be a rottie/dobie cross.

I don't agree with giving crossbreeds silly names (often containing the words "oodle" or "poo") but there is nothing wrong with telling people what they are crossed with. It will give the new owners an idea what they might be getting both in terms of size, looks and character.

I have a lovely rescue crossbreed and I know what he's crossed with. He looks like a nice easy going popular breed of dog, and he is, but I also see glimpses of behaviour which could only have come from his mum and no one believes me when I tell them what she was when they guess only on appearance.

this is how people describe how their lurchers are bred although they can be quite confusing at times, you get 1st cross which is half and half, then the 3/4, the 5/8 3/8, 1st cross to 1st cross is a second cross, im sure there is more ill have to look in the books later

Absolutley correct Hayley,  wish I had used a Lucher example instead of a Horse one, people might have been able to relate better.  It is quite simple to work out really, and nothing to do with silly names and things, just a factual indication of the parentage of a cross-breed or mongrel.  If you think about it, each parent puts in 50%, and that breaks down into 25%  from each grandparent (a quarter) and 12.5% (an eigth) from each great-grandparent.

Same as I describe my first Beardie as 1/2 show and 1/2 working lines
