Tess has had a gunky eye for a couple of days ive been using cold tea and it has inproved but not cleared up, has anyone got any tips other than taking her to the vets which i will if no better, thank you

the vet will probably give you eye drops with chloramphenical (sp) in them.  This used to be a POM for humans but can now be bought over the counter in the form of optrex infected.  this is what I always use as a first call for my dog and haven't needed to go to vets for this since it became available without prescription.

I have absolutely no idea.  Probably wouldn't risk it myself if bitch was pregnant but have just checked medical book and there are no contra indications with pregnancy in humans.  If you want to google it the spelling is chloramphenicol.

well thats that one solved, DO NOT GIVE IT TO ANIMALS WHICH ARE PREGNANT. i dont know if it could be to do with her hormone change, ill keep ane EYE out on it, lol

My sister-in-law has a westie with what the vet referred to as dry eye, she was offered drops at £44 per tube, she works in a  chemist and the vet gave her some long winded name which translated to optrex infected when she looked it up - its the same stuff.

Remember that vets are forbidden by law to prescribe a 'human' version of a drug if there's an equivalent version that's been licenced for use on animals. Only if there isn't an animal's equivalent can they use a human drug.

in this case it is the same active ingredient.  the base ingredients that are carrying the main ingredient may be different but this is the same active ingredient.  In the same way antibiotics for dogs are still antibiotics and have the same chemical structure but have a different name rather than the name they are distributed through the NHS.

some good news, iv used warm milk as would be used to clean up conjunctivitis in humans and its seemed to clear my girls eye up brilliant, i done this this morning and since then shes never had any gunk, try it before u spend lots of money, best application, mornin and night, or you could do 3 times a day, worth trying, cant hurt anything
