Hi
Wondered if anyone could help me here -
My Bitch has just turned three, she is speyed, very active, does agility & lots of walks.
She seems to be getting fatter by the day . I have her on a diet food and have reduced her food too , but still she grows.
Any ideas suggestions please???

Have you had her checked for any thyroid problems?

What a nice title for a thread

What food do you have her on? Diet foods tend be very carb and grain heavy and in some dogs this is turned straight to sugars and stored as fat.
I would put her on a high protein low carb and Low/no grain food, doesn't have to be "diet".

I am having the same problem with my bitch, she will be 4 years old in May and wasy emergency spayed last July.
She goes for regular walks and eats less then the others but still she looks like a barrel on legs!! bless her!
I do feed a complete food but also do the BARF diet, I am slowly putting her onto a complete BARF diet in hope things get better.
If no change I will def take her to the vets xx

Unfortunately a side effect of spaying and maturity is less food needed, and it can be quite a drastic reduction.
My 8 year old bitch is now on just 5 ounces of food (used to have 7) and my youngster at 15 months is on double what the rest get.

Hi ...sorry about the title !!!!
She's on Beta lite - but clearly its not working for her .....I'm getting conflicting advice - some people say less protein will help with her weight ?
Has she got any problems with her coat, letheragy, behaviour? What breed, age? Some breeds are prone to thyroid.

I'd still go for thyroid testing myself.

I have to say my oldest dachsie, a girl, has always been large and it was also necessary to spay which no doubt hasn't helped. She is now huge even though she has been monitored by the vet for a considerable time now - and having tried various diet foods. One thing I haven't tried to any great extent is cooking chicken thighs with lots of veg. recommended to feed her one thigh and a pile of veggies. Might be worth a try.

In my breed that only need to eat what is advised for a dachs, when having weight issues substituting veg seems the only way to go, as otherwise cutting the food down means the dog just scavenges when on walks.
Food is bulked out with cooked or raw Carrot, green beans, pumpkin (unsweetened easy to get in the US), any of the squash or marrow family (though a bit pricey unless you grow your won). some people use cooked cabbage, but that can make them windy.
The veg can be used with their good quality (not diet) dry food, or meat and bone.

She is a collie x retriever.
Her coat has in fact become slightly duller. She seems well enough in herself...

Oooh, dull coat and overweight, sounds like hypothyroidism to me. I'd have her thyroid levels checked.
