I have a 15 Month old Dobe girl. Since roughly about January she has been having a bloody discharge, at first We thought She had come into season but it has carried on up until now. We don't actually get drips of blood around the place only really if she sits somewhere or We wipe her. The blood is very dark red almost a mahogany colour.Sometimes there is quite a bit of blood and other times it's just a smear. She is fine in herself in every other way.
I have took her to the vet and She was put on a 4 Week course of anti-biotics but still there is no change. I also have a male who is the majority of the time trying to mate her and also  has marked in the house a few times which He had never done before. As far as I know She has not had her 1st season as yet. Just thought I would write on here and see if anyone could offer any advice.

I HAVE A 8 WEEK OLD BLACK LAB . HIS STOOL IS RUNNY WITH MUCUS & A LITTLE BLOOD HE DID GET DE-WORMED A FEW DAYS AGO CAN THIS CAUSE THE BLOOD AND COULD IT BE CAUSED BE THE FACT ITS A NEW HOUSE AS WEVE HAD HIM 3 DAYS .

I would take him to the vet just for a check over, worming can sometimes cause looser poo, but I have never had a bloody poo.

Hi sincypoos, when I got my pup at 10 wks , he had runny poo with mucus and a bit of blood too. The blood was always at the end after  he had finished!! The vet said it was a touch of colitis and gave two lots of ABs cos first lot didn't work ( probably because I didn't change his food with the first lot ). He was wormed too. As soon as I changed  his food to naturediet puppy, his poo became firm and no more blood and mucus. Pop into the vet and see what they say. I didn't change Louis' food gradually but straight away as his tummy was playing up anyway even though most times you should do it slowly!! I read online somewhere that dryfood can cause a bit of tummy upset in pups too if they are a bit tummy sensitive so you should moisten it a little if thats what you feed.

Edit to add - yes , the upheavel and stress of leaving mum and littermates and changing homes can cause tummy probs but not the blood I should think!!! you would normally just get the diarrhoea

Thank you killickchic weve called the vet as there was a little blood and alot of mucus this morning . He said to come in first thing tomorrow morning with little TOMMY and he will check him again i'll tell you hoe it goes tomorrow thank you for all your help .

I have a 12 week old Westie who also has blood in his poo at the end, fresh blood. I have told the vet but she didn't seem that concerned (PDSA) he was last at the vet last tuesday for innoculations, has already had worming stuff from the vet , he was really infested I bought him from Pets in Particular.I thought it may have cleared up by now but it is still there this morning. I will mention colitis when I go to see her. This board has really put my mind at rest, great people.

I do hope you have your pup insured.  any pup sold through a pet shop will be from a puppy farm or very poor breeder (not worthy of the name, as no ethical breeder woudl sell to a Pet shop retail outlet).  Very little will have been done to ensure the parents were healthy and not passing on problems to their pups and the best will not have been done rearing them either and being worm ridden is pretty par for the course.

As badly bred Westies especially have a lot of skin and digestive problems I would make sure your well covered.

went to the vet this morning with little tommy . vet said it might be a little colitis gave him a antibiotic injection and a course of KAOBIONC never heard of this before .he said to feed him scrambled egg on toast and fresh rice and chicken for three days and take him back in a week he refused to give him his 8 week injection or worm him until he is better is this right . and is the diet ok ?

reply for sindypoo Mmm sometmes a pup that has a heavy worm burden will have blood in the poo from the worms , have you checked his poo ! is he scratching his bottom or been sick as sometimes they can vomit them up.

He may well have colitis as vet says scrambled egg not sure about the toast but the rice and chicken is ok

what food is he on if it is james well beloved I would recommend you change it

Thank you starryeyes . he is still on the food that the breeder had him on ( BETA PUPPY ) i have been recommended to change it when he comes off the vets diet can you recommend me a good puppy food please ( anyone ) . i have checked his poo defenitley no worms he has been sick today since the vet could this be because of the antibiotic injection that the vet gave him this morning . And again THANK YOU EVERYONE for helping me and my family with our new bundle of joy .

Has he eaten sometimes a dog will bring up bile if they have an empty stomach. The reason I asked about the food is I had a problem a while back concerning JWB food and it causing blood in the p** and a rash with dog vomiting .
The food I recommend is Nutro puppy lamb and rice which I use and have weaned my litters on . I also like arden grange or naturediet  as a wet food.
If he keeps vomiting , lethargic , not eating, or has a temperature I would get back in touch with the vet to be safe.

on the vets recommendation we are feeding tommy rice , fish , boiled chicken ,etc there is no longer any signs of blood his stool it is still soft but not as bad as it was . we have since found out that our puppy is actually 2 weeks older than the breeder told us ( 10 weeks old ) and has still had no injections have to wait until at least next week until he is better . THANK YOU all for your help and starryeyes our dog loves tuna too  !!!!!!

some time ago our oldest boy started to pass blood and stopped eating, scared the hell out of us!!!

took him to the vet- discovered that it was a bad case of gastroenteritis

we can only guess that it was bacterial as he went back to his old diet a few days later.

it can be caused by diet though so changing it might be advisable.

Make sure its tuna in spring water not brine! Gotta watch out for the salt content

heya coleen, tommy got an anti biotic injection and 5 days worth of antibiotics from the vet in monday, we changed his food to basic chicken and rice for a few days as advised by the vet. We puy him onto BURNS hollistic puppy mini bites this morning, hes hardly eaten anything all day and the last time he went to the loo there was blood and mucus in his stool again, hes still got two lots of meds to take then hes finished the course. Do you think that it is because we changed his food to quickly? Would appreciate any advice you could give, many thanks leanne

Hi Leanne. So sorry to hear Tommy is still not better. All dogs react differently to different things, so yes, for Tommy it could have been too quick. With Louis we got the same ( jab and ab's) but I put him on Naturediet puppy as well which is a wet food, really good quality. I changed his food straight off without doing it gradually as his tummy was so bad anyway. After just 2 meals of this, his poo became firm and the blood and mucus stopped. I did try him on Burns mini bites but he wouldn't touch it at all. Louis' tummy is still very sensitive, every time I try him with a new flavour or treat even egg sometimes, he gets the squits looks like he has to stick with only a few things ...I always put him back on chicken and rice when this happens and gradually add his naturediet back in then his dry food(orijen- moistened) I never feed the chicken and rice for too long, just til the poo starts to get firmer.I find dry food fed dry can upset Louis too
Try Tommy on naturediet or one of the other really good wet foods and see what happens.You could always try wetting his dry food too. Watch he doesn't get dehydrated If his diarrhoea goes on for too long ,you will need to go back to the vet- they have tabs to help firm him up and also probiotics to add to his food to replace the healthy gut bacteria. Watch his bottom doesn't become sore too - you can put a smear of vaseline on !!
If he is running around and is happy in himself, not moping or in pain, then it won't matter if he misses a meal

Am actually in the middle of getting his tummy back to normal after feeding him a doggie chocolate bone, which he so loved, but his tummy didn't.... Vet gave ab's, canikur and protexin - haven't given the ab's though as I feel he's had too many !!! and have only used 2 canikur...i'll save the others for next time

Keep us posted on Tommys progress, but always, if worried, call the vet.

Have they checked his stools for Giardia.  The treatment for which would be Panacur, but a different dosage and number of days it is given.

Campylobacter infection can also be difficult to clear and cause persistent loose stools.
