Hi all,

I have just bought my lad some cod liver oil tablets and intend chucking one into his food now and again(sticking to sensible amount).  However, I have a query....  am aware that too much VIT A is bad for dogs and understand the levels of VIT A should not be too high but the recommended doseage on the bottle of tablets I've bought seems really high to me and I just wondered whether anyone agrees that there should be some kind of warning on the bottle about over doing VIT A. I know my boy's food contains a certain level of VIT A but some people wouldnt necessarily know about all this and would probably end up giving too much and ultimately causing damage to the dog unintentionally.

What does everyone think?

I guess the response will be that people should research what they give to their dogs tho.....

Personally I would not give CLO to my Labs.. they get FBO (Fish Body Oils)  if you do a search on Tohme's posts (not been on for a while now) there are some very informative guides

Hope that helped

Flax seed oil is the best, for both you and your dogs you will get all the Omega 3's you need from this and it is safer for your dogs.
If you do give cod liver oil then it has to be balanced with vitamin e oil and not good to give cod liver oil in warm weather either.

Flax seed oil  something I would definately not give to my dogs.. it wont harm them but, Flax (linseed) is grain sourced and many dogs cannot convert these to a bioavailable format.

A good question would be to ask why we are supplementing at all.. a good commercial feed or Raw diet should give your dogs all the vits and minerals they need...

I can't figure out if those studies were done on people or dogs?!

Flaxseed gave my dog the raging squits. It also makes some incredibly itchy. FBO is much better if it can be tolerated.

I have decided to throw the CLO tabs away and will give Henry a sardine now and again in his food.

I just think that the oil would help keep his mobility up and joints flexible etc.

Studies have been carried out on both.  I've always added flax seed oil since mine were pups and it does suit them.  It is excellent for joints, coat etc.  Obviously not everything will suit every dog, so it is trial and error.
