Hi Steph
Yes, I recently had a Chi bitch go for her jabs and health check.  The vet picked up an Inguinal Hernia, but because of size, said he would prefer to wait until she was 6 months.  It's rather more surgery than an umbilical hernia.  My practise charges £460 to do one, but, as it happens, when she went in, he found one the other side.  Took 2 hours and I did buy her for breeding, and I won't breed from her ever now.  They do need to rest after, and I put her in a 4ft puppy crate in the kitchen.  She could see all her mates, and was very good about it. Although she was obviously allowed to go up the garden for short periods, I limited her activity with the others, as they would have played too much.  She was limited for about 10 days.  I did worry about 3 days after surgery, when blood seemed to be showing under the skin.  Easiest to explain is, it looked similar to love bites.  I also found slight swelling which felt like a bubble, and popped her in to check it was ok.  It was only fat, which is difficult to stitch.  Within 2 weeks she was smooth as can be, no swelling, and can't see the incision.  Very successful surgery.
The hurrier I go - the behinder I get!

Yes I bought an 8 week old puppy which had this type of hernia ( I didn't realise she had it ), my vet was happy to operate at 16 weeks but I waited till she was 6 months old.
