Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and was looking for some advice.  My GSD developed a really swollen eye and had lots of green/yellow discharge from it.  When I got home from work, it was much worse so called and got a vet appt.  The vet was great, tested for scratches (poor B looked like something from Ghostbusters - illuminous green eye!) and gave anti-inflammitary tablets and eye drops.

After a day, the infection and swelling was so so much better and now almost a week later, I would say he is perfectly normal again.  My question is that when we saw the vet, he wanted to see him again in a week to check things were ok.  Now, whilst I would spend any necessary money for my dogs health, I also don't want to be taken advantage of.  The original consultation was £35 plus meds.  I was thinking of calling and asking how much the follow up consultation would be but didn't want them to think I am a bad owner because I am not.

Would you pay for a follow up if you thought your dog was back to full health or is this a way for the vet to make more money unnecessarily?  Should I cancel it or will I get put it the black book?

Thanks,
Natalie.

I would take the dog back, regardless of whether you have to pay or not. The eye might look ok, but there could still be infection there that hasn't quite cleared. Some vets charge for a follow up visit, and some don't, so until you ask you won't know ;-)

Eyes are so precarious i would definately take my dog back regardless. They aren't trying to get more money out of you, they are trying to do their best to treat your dogs eye.

Might be wrong and all vets are different I suppose, but as far as I can remember a follow up check I have not had to pay anything, unless more medication has been needed. :-)

As it was such a serious infection I personally would just go for the all clear. Even if your vet should charge, (though hopefully not) it should be no more than a health check approx £9

I thought the follow up was free too. Maybe wrong but you definitley dont pay if its after a follow up after an op.

just ring and find out is the best thing.

Hi

My vets dont charge for a follow up unless medication is needed but my mums one in Hertfordshire does. Its £35 the min she walks in the door regardless.

My vets charge for the follow up wether you need meds or not.
But if its an op follow up then they dont charge for the follow up just the meds.
