I would love to have a wired hair or long haired daschund, but I am planning to move to Panama city, Panama which is extremely humid during the rainy season. Also, I don't want a dog that is shedding all the time ... does anybody know how does a daschund lives in a humid enviroment and if they tend to be shedding?

Hi Laura,

Im no dachie expert but the wirehaired is a breed myself and my partner like very much. I'd say out of the two types the wire would be better, the coat wont shed but will require hand stripping by a groomer (or get a book and teach yourself! ).
I should imagine that even in a humid environment they would cope ok. Obviously they would need to be kept indoors(not in an outdoor kennel), and if you have the benefit of fans and air-con (I'm guessing you will do) they should be fine. Be considerate when taking them out and about in the hottest part of the day.
If the grooming side of things is a little tricky for you, why not consider the smooth version? No major moulting, no fancy grooming, no huge amount of hair so it would find it easier to keep cool and just as lovely as the other two types.

I had a mini-wire (Muffin) & he was such a little character. A wire would be better in a humid environment, but a smooth would probably cope better with the heat? I believe they are quite nesh, why not have one of each, they would be company for one another. Linda Lusardi was on Paul O'Grady with a little mini-smooth today, she was lovely.
