Hi All,
I have a 31/2 yr old  bitch who last week i had mated at day 11(thurs) and 13(sat). She was still bleeding slightly at the time. Today i noticed she has a quite deep red discharge which is a bit smelly. Is it possible she has picked up an infection when being mated or is this normal?
Thank you

I will be interested to hear the replies to this one as I have just mated my bitch and she too had a deep red slightly smelly discharge too, so maybe it is normal.  I certainly hope so anyway.

It is not unsual for a bitch to carry on discharging after a mating some do.
What does it smell like?  If it is a 'fishy' smell then this is normally an indication that she is ready for mating and the 'fishy' smell is a turn on for the male dog!

If at all concerned about about the smell I would contact your vet, but it all depends on what it actually smells like.

I have a vaginal swab done on my bitch before I mate her to make sure she has no infections before mating this is normally done on day one of her season.

I am sure there will be some more experienced CD'ers replying to this post, but in my own opinion unless the smell is a 'horrible' one I would not tend to worry xx

I find my girls discharge is heavier for a few days after a mating any way, plus the season doesn't just stop because they've been mated.  I know when my last girl went to stud, she had no colour, but boy did she stink......vet said it was just stale blood smell and that was what encouraged the stud dog.....yep he was right, it certainly didn't put him off.  She had a perfectly healthy pregnancy with a litter of 7 at the end,
