I wonder if anyone has experience with Pennhip testing and whether they have ever had the same dog BVA hipscored also and how the results compared???
Which would you have done and why ??

I haven't had a dog Penn Hipped, but Wukee's brother in The Netherlands has been Penn Hipped & this is what his owner sent me

>Coffee had his hips pennhipped this week. The result couldn't have been better. His distraction index is somewhere between 0.31 and 0.35. The average for BC's is 0.45

She is waiting for the offical results, it will be interesting to see what his X rays are like at a year

I would have had Wukee done if the nearest Vet that does Penn Hip was nearer(over 150 miles away)
MM \O^O/ OMG Rjj(Cornish Clown)is 3 eek cool Jessie(Witch)is 2 :-) Wukee has landed ;-)

What is Penn Hip, and how does it differ from normal hipscoring?

Just googled:-)

With the Penn Hip it's based on the breed, don't know whether this is a good idea or not, or this is how I take it.  Penn Hip has more x-rays of all of the hip, where the BVA has just the one view.  I think with some vets the idea of Penn Hip might put them off especially if they are female vets due to the number of x-rays the dog has to have and the health risks if you did a number of them.

Some in my breed have taken up with the Pen Hipp I've carried on with BVA scoring for now.

Didn't understand this????  What has the sex of the vet to do with anything?

But the vet leaves the room when doing the x-rays

This is just what I'd heard on a discussion about it and maybe why it's not become popular over here as yet.

I don't understand it enough to give constructive advice on the ways forward etc.  I suppose in some ways it may help that it's breed based rather than lumping all dogs under the same scoring, I don't know, but we all know that different breeds are built differently, so it maybe understandable why some of the finer dogs have lower hipscores.  Looking at my own breed and other similiar related breeds i.e. the Poodle, Irish Water Spaniels, Lagotto's etc. our breeds seem to have very similiar scores showing up on the BVA system.  Then you have other breeds and crosses that seem to have a higher variance where you've got dogs scoring 0 and ones in the 90's.

The only stuff I have found is comparing it's predictive ability against OFA grading system.  Now OFA the dog has to be two years old for a final evaluation, but they can have a preliminary evaluation.

Under the UK and Australian scheme we have the scoring system which examines each part of the hip and socket, and is done from a year with a once only evaluation.

I had heard you can have puppies done from 4 months old for Pennhip testing. Although I am a little worried about haing to have her put under anaesthetic twice I think it would be very useful to have both that and the BVA test done.
