My 12 month old bichon frise dog Nelson was castrated 5 days ago. I am a little concerned as he is not walking very well, constantly cries and only goes to the toilet when he really needs to which is where ever he is sitting/lying. I called the vets 24 hours after the op as Nelson had not been to the toilet - i had an appointment booked but Nelson luckily went to the toilet so the vet recommended i wait until the procedural 10 day check-up. However Nelson seems to be getting worse and will not go outside in the garden or even walk anywhere around the house - he was stitched on the inside and it seems to be healing ok. I guess there is a certain element of pain thresholds between dogs but i have grown up with dogs and have never seen a reaction like this before. I plan on taking Nelson back to the vets tomorrow but just wanted some general feedback to put my mind at rest.
Thanks
Some dogs are more sensitive to pain than others, and I would have expected hime to be sore the day after the operation, but if he were my dog I would be getting in touch with the vet right now and getting an emergency appointment for this afternoon (Sunday). After five days I would expect my dog to be acting relatively as normal, although having restricted exercise, and would be worried about the symptoms you describe. He may have something as simple to treat as an infection but for Nelson's sake he needs help today.
Good luck
