Hs anyone had a dog hip scored at an older age.I have had a 12 month old dog done years ago but wondered if having an older dog done will make a difference.
Also anyone tell me how much it is these days?
Thanks
Nikki

I know of a dog that wasn't hip scored until it was 5 and had single figures each side, well below the breed average.  the cost is on the link below for the scoring by the BVA and each vet charges different prices for the sedation/anesthetic.

my gsd bitch had her hips scored at 4 years and scored 5/4= 9
if you can't decide between a shepherd, a setter or a poodle get them all adopt a mutt

I don't think it make's much difference, if they have good hips, they have good hips, if they don't; they don't, regardless of whatever age.

Spender was 5 when he got his done 3:6 = 9

Sheba was 4, a 48:48 = 96  eek

I had Carina done at almost 6 and she was 6/4 total 10.  Now this is a pup who at 5 months was jumping up and down about 5 foot into the air and still does it to this day.  I remember when Brio's owners came to pick him up as a puppy they couldn't believe the muscles that Carina had at 11 months and it was due to her jumping up and down all the time I think!

Lastar was done at 7 his weren't great but with what he did as a puppy in Spain I'm not really surprised at his high score.

A friend of mine had her dog done at 2 years. Result B/D (this is in Europe... B is ok, D is not good)
As the D was mainly because the hip was "loose" she decided to get the dog done again a year later to see if it would have tightened up.
Result D/D so even the good hip was no longer good!

I have to say this is the first time I have heard hips changing so drastically.
I have had my dogs done at 7 months and the pictures taken then and at 2 years have been the same (I took the puppy xrays with me to compare to the official ones that got send off).
Others I know say the same, hips are what they are and good hips should not became bad, until maybe when the dog is very old but this would be due years of use just like when we get old...

A dog I bred wasn't scored until he was fully mature (born 1998, scored 2003) and scored almost exactly the same as his sister who had been scored at a year old, he was just 1 point higher on one feature.  His score was 9 and our breed average is 13.

He won Best Veteran dog at our club show today at 9 1/2 I would assume because of his fitness and Good movement.

I think that good hips are going to show no/very little change with age, whereas poor ones will show deterioration.

Phoned round a few vets this morning....all prices were between £170 and £210.
Was shocked at the seemimg total lack of knowledge of the proceedure from nearly all the vets...most receptionists didn't have a clue about it and needed to phone back after research.
The last vet I phoned was the total opposite...straight forward explaination of what was needed and seemed to know what they were on about. They quoted me £105...I said I assumed I needed to add on BVA costs etc and she said no it was all included...anaesthetic,plates and BVA scoring.Needless to say he is booked in for Friday!

That's a really good price Asa.  My bitch was done earlier this year at the cost of £105.00 for digital hip and elbow xrays, sedation and copy of the xrays on disk, I then paid the BVA fee by cheque on top of that - £67 I think - this was in the Banbury area.  Her litter brother was done a few weeks ago at a different vet and it cost £330!!!!!  His owner had to pay the BVA fee on top of that as well!!!  Disgusting if you ask me!  How can they justify that cost?  No wonder many of the pet breeders in my breed don't hip score when the cost is that high, it totally deters them from doing it :-( Anyway, that wasn't the point of your post and I digressed...sorry!

Out of interest, where do you live?  (General area is ok if you don't want to say exactly) :-)

Good luck with it too! :-)
