I have a 16 and half year old rottie cross. When I got her at 8 weeks old she had dew claws on both front legs and double ones on her back legs.I had them all removed when she was 8 months old as they tended to catch on the back ones.

I've seen a few Ridgebacks born with rear dew claws - not a breed requirement, though, they've had them removed!

Norwegian Buhunds have horrid (I am told) dewclaws on the back legs that are removed.  Yet no-one I have ever spoken to has ever seen the on Norwegian Elkhound pups (thankfully).

or could the hind dew claws be a gentic thing beacuse to the type breed of the dam and the sire unknow,
mixed up genes.
or have the pups taken on the sire gene to get the dew claws,

my guess it could be a collie

By briedog (*****) [gb] Date 24.04.08 07:13 GMT
i did a seasch last night on this subject.
it more likey to be gentic problem and beacuse they are of a mix breed,

Italian Spinones have double hind dew claws, some are even born with double double ones, the extra one has to be removed.
Many breeds are born with hind dew claws, but most are taken off unless it is specifically required in the breed standard.

One of my rotties had rear dew claws, they were horrible floppy things almost like extra toes without any substance to them. I was paranoid she was going to catch and tear them, so when she was spayed we had them removed as well. They took a long time to heal though, much longer than the spay.

It's not a genetic"problem"as such it was the norm in the past, the claws are now redundant in most breeds & have disappeared, but pop up from time to time. My Rjj had rear dew claws, the first his breeder had in his puppies in over 30 years of breeding. He isn't a mixed breed but an ISDS WSD(BC with the KC) I've seen them in the odd GSD puppy & Beardie puppy. Rjj had them removed on a Tuesday & the stitches on the Friday & the next week you couldn't tell he had ever than them !
MM \O^O/ OMG Rjj(Cornish Clown)is 3 eek cool Jessie(Angel)is 1 :-) Wukee has landed ;-)

My 'mutt' had rear dew claws, behind 1 of them, there were 3 mangled little dew claws, that looked like tiny little bits of skin with a little bit if nail (like a grain of rice) sticking out the end. When he was castrated we had them (all of them) removed, as the claws grew excessivley quick and he had a tendacy to get them stuck on things. They healed up nicely in no time :-)

All breeds can have but not so common in most.  We have two Pomeranian's that have them at the moment.  Never had any for over 20 years and then the last 3 litters every pup has had them and we actually didn't look for them as we've not had it.  I hate them and hate trying to clip them as it's not solid and the flap flops everywhere.  YUCK I HATE THEM!!
My dogs aren't my whole life, but my life wouldn't be whole without them. 05/01/08 11 stone 12 lbs

Sibes are sometimes born with them, they are usually removed.

Beaucerons *must* have them, they are very substantial double ones - jointed and with their own pads

I have had shar pei puppies with them!
By MandyC (*) [gb] Date 24.04.08 21:44 GMT
Rotties can have them on the rear, i always remove any rear ones but the front ones are not loose like the rear, it depends on the parents and the genes, my foundation bitch produced about half her litter with them but her daughter had none in her litter. back ones are horrid and IMO are better off removed at birth as removing them later as someone on here as already said takes a much longer time to heal and then the older dog can chew at the wound too.
By huskypup (***) Date 25.04.08 11:18 GMT
My little 'un had them, now removed.

As somebody has already mentioned Briards have them and they must  have them as they are also jointed with their own pads and are an essential part of the dogs anatomy to assist with them working. I believe Beaucerons and Briards are very closely related so the same applies.
