Very well put Lucy, one other thing check the ring has nothing that could damage or distract the exhibits and pick up or stick down if there is anything untoward, and man the poo bucked and sometimes mop. Really a job between a clerk and a cleaner

Think the main thing is you take on the smooth running of the ring and let the judge get on with the judging. Agree Lucy I enjoy it to you can learn a lot about breeds other than your own and judges are often happy to talk to you and tell you why they placed as they did.

Oh yes, forgot to mention checking for rubbish and mops! Yes, I like it when the judges talk to me after making their decisions, it helps me understand judging better. Also I keep an eye out for people who look unsure and make sure they know what they are doing, that's partly what I meant with the puppies in Junior bit, I've often reminded someone they have an unbeaten puppy and they've been grateful. Oh yes, also if it's a big class, go round and tell everyone when the last dog is being seen so they can get ready, and warn them if the judge is just shortlisting.
