I personally would not add anything to the pup's food to stop eating stool's until both stomachs have recovered 100%. Be prepared with either paper or a poop bag before they go outside this way you can keep your eyes on them if pup's go near poo (attempt 2 eat) Just shout "No" at them very loud 2 give a little fright when pup stops give lots of praise while picking poo up, try doing just this until stomach's are 100% recovered as you do not want to irate stomach's anymore than need be.
Take one step at a time as you may find when you stop feeding the chicken and rice and place them onto a manufactured food they may stop eating faeces

For the tree bark powder it is one 5ml teaspoonful per 10 kgs bodyweight for each of your pups I would give 2.5ml each. You can give more if it is pure water diarrhoea.
Try doing what Jeangenie says and cook the rice more make the rice real soggy very soft so that it will be easier to digest.
I got the probiotic and have given to them during their lunch meal.
When I get the tree bark powder,I will add into their food.
Solid poo at noon for both too.
I personally would not add anything to the pup's food to stop eating stool's until both stomachs have recovered 100%i would agree with this. Keep it simple and be watchful until their stomachs are better. They are both very young yet, we had a dog that ate poo at various time is his life, disgusting habit but didn't do him any harm at all. One of current dogs did this for a few weeks as a puppy but then stopped and has never done it since and she is 3 now. I would get their health sorted out first then tackle the coprophragia. It is fairly normal for dogs remember, its just us humans that find it disgusting

And of course if they are not digesting their food well because of irritated upset tummies what comes out is pretty much what went in and therefore from pups point of view tasty. Puppies digestions are not as efficient as an adults and this recycling would actually be a survival tactic in the wild.
Barbara and the Grey Curly Tails.
yesterday evening I let them out in the yard for a 20mins run. Both went crazy and happy.Carrying the small ball as they run.
Winter's poo was watery pale but Summer's was solid piece.
I have a question here. How do I know if they are cold?Cos yesterday's evening was at lower than 10 degree celsius and today they are expecting a heavy storm again.
So far, they are very smart. If we couldnt go out,due to weather or due to me having to run errand. The only place they soiled would be the paper.I m happy for this progress.
I gave the 2nd probiotic this morning with their breakfast.Hope I can see must solid poo before their 2nd shot this Thursday.
If they are cold they may shiver or run outside quickly do potty then run inside, my one poke's his nose out the door and refuses to go out if cold until he really needs to LOL.
then they are probably not cold.
Winter is always very hyper out in the yard but summer is always slower. But the other way round when its indoor.
I noticed a very cute thing. Winter would always run to me when she is upset. For example, my son would be throwing the small balls and both of them would run to chase it. Whenever winter doesnt get the ball, she would run to me with that look as if a small kid needs her mummy.
Yesterday couldnt go out again cos there was hurricane alert.Even though the hurricane bypass us to somewhere else, the wind was very strong.I heard my trash bin knocking everywhere.Dont want my 2kg puppy flying away haha
3rd day on probiotic.so far so good.
I would like to ask. Today is the 4th day I am giving probiotic.
so far so good.
I have been feeding them rice and chicken for almost 2 weeks now.Since Sunday, when I saw the stool solid. I begin to add a few dry food inside the rice and chicken. So far so good. And I have been increasing the amount of dry food day by day.
2 days ago.I started giving them dry food with chicken and rice ONLY in morning cos I have to add in the probiotic powder. And only dry food in lunch and dinner. So far so good BUT yesterday, their stool was SOOOOO smelly again!! but still not loose.
What happened?
And does it mean I need to give probiotic forever? Do I still need to add in the bark tree powder when I get it?

yay! glad the poo's firmed up!
actually just remembered something i read somewhere about poo...apparently tinned pumpkin can help get the consistancy better (if the prob comes back might be worth a go. i forgot becasue as far as i'm aware you can't get it here...
behavioural issues take a long time to fix... we never got our rescue mastiff out of the habit of stealing tissues to eat (though thats rather less yucky than your problem), persistance is the only thing you can try...
you are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here
> Dont want my 2kg puppy flying away haha
this is no joke! this happened to one of my aunts frenchies in the 80's! thankfully she only went a few feet (right into a puddle at a show) but apparently they all got the fright of their lives

thats sweet, and good that shes coming to you for support, might make the training a bit easier if she thinks her 'sister' is a meanie

Being terriers that originate from Scotland temperatures above freezing should be no problem unless you get their coats clipped and it is wet.
Barbara and the Grey Curly Tails.
no,they are how they are.I never do anything for their fur yet.I didnt even bath them for over a week cos everytime when I bathed them, sure loose stool.
I hope someone can give me some advice about the probiotic and the stool became so unbearable smelly again...
Gosh, you bath each week?
My dog is 2 and a half and has only twice had a bath! I occasionally just hose him down a bit if he rolls in something very smelly, otherwise i brush him every day and i find that keeps him looking great. He is mainly dark coloured, though, with a white dog you may need to wash a bit more, though i didn't find the need with our dalmatian when he was alive, either, a stiff brush takes off the mud you collect on a walk, i find.

Don't be bathing these pups every week. Forgetting the coats for now they may intact soap etc the poor little mites need to be left and rested. Avoid anything that could " contribute" to the upset tummies.
A Westies and Scottie generally need bathed once or twice a year.
Get yourself a bottle of Johnsons corn starch baby powder. Make sure it is the corn starch. Use a tiny bit on a brush to clear them up if they get dirty.
What complete food is it? can you not feed something a bit more natural to them ?
Sorry to confuse. Winter is the westie and summer is the scottie. My kids name it this way cos westie is white and scottie is black,as to winter is mostly white with snow and summer is hot and it will get us darker tan.
How about a simpler way
"W" for
Winter and
Westie...
"S" for
Summer and
Scottie..forget the tan version
no,I didnt bath them weekly.I meant for over a week I didnt put them on running water even though they got real smelly.I just wipe them with wet wipes or just spray them with grooming spray.
I only had them for 3 weeks and bathed them once when they came back from petshop and they had the run ever since.
But this brand is already the most natural..it says no corn,no soy,no filler...
Their poo is sooooo smelly. It was much better when they were on rice and chicken.
about their names. yea, that was what my kids say..coincidentally W is westie and S is for Scottie.

What brand is it?
the natural variety prairie dog food.
It has 5 stars in USA.
Today the poo was softer and I even see blood strain in one glue type patch...what should I do?

A lot of the food that is high in fruit and veg can be quite smelly. Origen is one that is quite popular in the UK now but boy it makes them stink.
I had a quick look at the food. Could you try giving the same brand but in the can only for a while
http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/Natures-Variety-Prairie-Canned-Dog-Food/131018.aspx Have they finished all their worming medication?
What do they look like visually for body weight?
Are they getting any treats at all ? Are you giving fresh water only?
You have started feeding them commercial food far too early their stomachs have not recovered yet. Start again on the chicken and rice and keep giving the probiotic when you receive the tree barks give 2.5ml in each of their food mixed in. With probiotic you can give daily for the rest of their life's if you want it will not cause any harm.
I would not allow vaccinations to happen until you have had at least one week of healthy stool's just do not allow the pups to mix with other animals.
P.S
Please do not bath the pup's it is far to young if they get mucky let coats dry then brush their coats with a slicker brush, brush upwards then downwards this will keep their coats clean and in tip top condition. When it is time for a proper groom please - please find a groomer that handstrip's do not allow a groomer to use the clipper's on the pups.

I wouldn't be confusing her too much just now with the grooming

Lets get the food under control before we get the different methods of grooming started

I good trimmer can do a rolling coat and thinning scissor trim on a puppy very easily without constant hand stripping.

I agree Katt. you need to make changes slowly. I would go for the tinned praire which looks quite gentle BUT probabaly after chicken and rice jas been continually used for a few weeks.
Tazmanica on the link blue gave I noticed it has Timberwolf Organics Dog Food on it, In the UK i have been hearing very good reviews/results with this food.
>I wouldn't be confusing her too much just now with the grooming

LOL blue i will stop on the grooming you are right tum first and teaching the different methods of grooming later .
But I got to add if Tazmanica gets a slicker brush and starts brushing daily even if for a few minutes it is a good thing very good for bonding with the pups and keeping them clean may make life easier for her

I agree, slowly does it

As this thread has got rather long now, it's probably best to close it and start new threads where appropriate. Tazmanica, if you need more advice on feeding your pups, could you start another thread on the Feeding board (and one on the Behaviour board for training problems)
Thanks
