Anyone any info, we were showing at an IKC show with a puppy, she was under an Austrian judge, she is 8 months, got very promising grade and 1st, there was an intermediate bitch but she did not get the grade and therefore could not challange my puppy for the green star.The judge did not give the green star as she said puppy needed to mature, remember this was an IKC show and not a CACIB show so puppies can get the green star, whereas at CACIB they cannot get green star till in junior.

Can't see what is the problem? The judge described her as 'very promising' - but lots of things can go wrong before she reaches maturity. Just because puppies 'can' get the Green Star, it doesn't mean that they 'must'!

I have always been told that to challenge for the Green Star at any Irish Show you had to be graded 'Excellent' or you were not eligible to challenge.
That has certainly been the case in the last two years while I have been showing over there, and I show at IKC and International Shows.

That sounds really sensible to me. The judge cannot predict exactly how the pup will be as an adult and it may grow too large, not big enough, go out of balance, etc etc (not saying that yours will do anything like that,of course ).  I really wish that judges would only give CCs to mature dogs.

Sounds to me like the judge just withheld.  There is no problem doing that I don't think at IKC shows, I assume you still was awarded Best of Sex though?  and therefore competed for BOB?

I show my Jack Russell Terriers in Ireland as they are all registered in IKC (stupid england dosen't register the breed, now the only country that dosen't as AKC now does!).
A puppy can only get promising or very promising there is no excellent for puppies under 9 months of age.
The puppy being awarded VP should have been awarded the green star if it beat the other bitches, if the pup was good enough for a VP grade & to beat an older bitch then i don't see why the judge didn't award her the GS' to say she isn't mature enough is not IMO good enough reason, we see lots of breeds taking CC tickets in the UK as pups.
A  JRT bitch pup got VP in her class recently & then took bitch green star & BOB over a champion import male, the bitch had glaring obvious faults though (roach back/flying ears) so i was surprised to see the judge award her GS & BOB.
Have you lodged your concerns with IKC? i would if i was you.

Why should a promising puppy automatically be worthy of a green star?  Just because it's promising doesn't always mean the puppy is worthy of being a champion?

No, actually, the AKC doesn't - nor does Canada.

If puppies are eligible for the green star and are graded very promising, they should get the award, according to several judges I have spoken to, as some puppies are very balanced at 8-9 months but perhaps need to fill  out..

Gabrielle, it is only juniors and above that are graded excellent..

Another weird one is the awarding of CACIB's.

A bitch I bred was Reserve Best bitch, she was in the Junior class and was just over 15 months old.  She was awarded the Res Green star, yet couldn't get the Res CACIB, as she had to be in the Intermediated class or above to qualify, not simply be over 15 months as presumed, so another exhibit was awarded the Res CACIB.

So at International shows entering Junior means your eligible over 15 month dog may miss out on the CACIB or RCACIB..

nightmare trying to remember the rules ofr IKC and international shows...

Heres one for you.  Puppy in IKC international show wins best junior and goes on to with Best in Breed.  As it is an international show it wins the Green Star but not the Cacib.  The problem arises with the reserve Green Star.  The judge walks over the the  Veteran Bitch and hands the reserve Green Star to the Veteran.  The owner of the Champion goes over to the Judge at this stage and tells her that the Champion should be awarded the Reserve Green star for what reason I'm unsure.  If anyone can help please do.  The champion then gets the Reserve Green Star and as the junior can't win the Cacib it get the CACIB also.  My question - why wan't the Veteran allowed the reserve Green Star.
