Previous Next Up Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / spayed bitch and entire male

I have a spayed 2 year old bitch and recently agreed to take on a friends patterdale terrier dog who is also 2 years old, He is entire. The patterdale has grown up as an only dog, but my bitch did come from a household where there where more dogs. Both are getting on very well, apart fro the fact that the patterdale keeps humping my bitch. She is not interested  in him as she is spayed, however she is so laid back she is not telling him off either. he is climbing all over her, and humping anything he can grab be it a leg or her tail or even her head. However he is constantly humping her, I can distact him and he will stop, but then he goes back and starts to do it again. Am I right in thinking that if he was causing the bitch discomfort of annoyance she would tell him off? he arrived yesterday.

The bitch is a large st Bernard and is so laid back she is horizontal. I was thinking that the way forward was to have him neutered, but would this calm things down?

i dont deem it fair to let this go on, but they dont want to be seperated, and as i agreed to take on the patterdale as a companion to my bitch it seems to deafeat the object. any advice?

As it is only the second day this is simply over excitement, eh will loose interest or she will eventually tell him off.  I suppose he just can't get over his luck having such a huge lovely girly to impress.

I have looked after males who lived without female companions and they all acted like s*x pests for the first day until told off or the novelty wore off.

I agree with brainless....I am sure the novelty will wear off. Nice to know they seem happy together though, :-)

> The bitch is a large st Bernard

perhaps she hasn't noticed :-)

if it's annoying her she'll quickly let him know. i would'nt worry about it, there is not risk of pups etc so let them sort it out between them. as brainless said he's probably just excited by the challange and the change

just be glad their clearly getting on so well!

she has been brought up with children, small pets, cats and smaller dogs and so i knew that there was a good chance here. Many people think its a little odd for such an pair, but he is tottaly besotted with her!

When I had a spayed bitch of 6 months come and live with me my snoop who had his bits he would always start humping her after their tea! as he weight 3 times more than her and would crush the poor little girl and would get scary savage with him so I  him done at 7 as your girl does not mind and no one is getting hurt I wouldn't worry...one day she might say Get Off ! and if you don't mind all the  C stains then I wouldn't worry.

Bet they look great together!

I have an entire male (2) and a castrated male (3) and they hump each other on a daily basis, I think it is normal doggy behaviour, neither seem to mind and unless either of them do then I don't interfere.

just added a pic in my profile for those who want a giggle!

He has settled down alot, and does listen when i say to stop, distracting him with a toy works well.
He does still have his "bit of fun" he does not try to hump anythign else though or any other dogs/bitches we meet on walks. I think he does see my cats a threat though tas he has taken to marking everything!

Dont think he has to worry about competiton from them , lol.
