What you are looking for is not a breed but a type of Lurcher.

It can't be easily predicted quite which parent the pup will take after most in character so as long as your happy with the personality of a Bedlington (a terrier) and a Whippet (sight hound) then I suggest you try specialist hunting and country publications where such dogs are more likely to be advertised.

You will have to remember what they are bred for though, their selection is for hunting and killing ability, so you have to realise this drive will be Strong and train accordingly.

Also something to bear in mind is how would your children feel if the dog caught and killed say a Rabbit, Squirrel or Rat on a walk?

Hi, can't help you with where to get one but I had a lurcher partly of this cross. She was bedlington/whippet x collie/greyhound. We got her when my youngest was a toddler, potty trained them both at the same time :-). Had 2 more babies after that. Bracken was the kindest and most gentle dog and loved my girls. If they inadvertantly hurt her ( they were taught to respect her ) or got on her nerves (noise etc) she would just get up and walk away. She never once growled, snapped, lunged or even lifted her lip at them. They would use her as a pillow in the evening, she would slow her pace if they held her lead, basically, I trusted her completely with them, but I have to say she was extremely well trained and had the perfect temperament to train! She would sleep curled on the sofa all day, but when we took her out, boy, could she run :-) She had a soft but wiry looking coat that didn't moult, she was dainty in her ways and very feminine, you could tell she was a girl without looking under ;-) - she was perfect. She lived until she was nearly 15, we were all devestated.
It has taken me 10 years to get another dog, she was so special - I still have a lock of her hair.
I hope you find one, they are lovely.
EDIT  yes she would catch rabbits, but our kids were brought up with country sports, shooting, netting etc so just took it in their stride

bed whips are normally great tempered souls in my experience and a very well known lurcher type. if you but countrymans weekly magazine there are often some advertised in there.

That was what I meant as many people are drawn to a breed but horrified if they show their working/canine instincts.

I have liked the Bedlingtons I have met, and the Whippets are a nice natured breed, so certainly would expect this type of Lurcher to be nice to live with, but quick and efficient at the job bred for.

i can't tell you anything on the cross but my sister has a whippet who is lovely. she was certainly challanging for the first 18 months as she was a cheeky puppy but she's calmed down beautifully now. gets on brilliantly with my sisters 5 year old, very neat and tidy barely moults. shes also a tough we thing and holds her own very well when playing with our bullmastiff.

you can tell though that she'd have any small furry she got the chance to, she'd watch our old cat with such a focused expression, you knew that if she wasn't being held she's have gone for her.

praise! shes going to need to pee or poo after eating, as soon as she wakes up, after playing for a bot and if you watch you'll notice she does a circling wiggly walk before she goes. at these times and when that happens take her where you want her to toilet, give her the toilet command (whatever you choose, we simply go with "toilet") then when she does (and she will) praise her like mad. pups love attention and praise so if she gets good feedback when she goes there then its worth her while to go there.

same applies for training anything really.
