Well my boy has had a jab, yesterday.
I am showing him on Sunday and am mixed in my thoughts.
If it works and his behaviour is improved then....does that mean I should forget showing and just have a castration done?
Also if it works does that mean his tempremant is okay ( I think he has a lovely one) then is it purely testosterone and he will be good to breed from?
Any body got any thoughts?

The future and the answer depends a lot on the age of your dog, how old is he?

P S The jab may well not have made a difference by Sunday.

Hm didn't your vet suggest waiting & trying the Suprelorin implant ?

He is now 2 1/2.
I know it can take 5 days to show any affect, if any.
And, no it was not mentioned about the Suprelorin

At 2.5 years one would expect that he is now adult so it will not improve with age. What exactly is the problem, sorry if I have missed a previous thread perhaps if that is the case you could give me the URL. Also am I correct to think this is a terrier?

It's due for release next week I think(I know that it's this month)I would contact your vet & try that before catsration

His behaviour has always been challenging, yes he is a terrier, he barks too much, is marking now over the new pup's pees. he sadly bit the JH trainer causing my daughter much grief. The groomer who I go to (yes I do him as well) says "He is a bit of a one off.."
At shows he is getting worse and worse on the table.
From we had him as a pup every one said ooh he's a terrier you must keep in charge, so we all tried to.
But in his defence he is a real fun lover who is a reat to take out walking, he gives you his whole attention,is friendly to other dogs unless of course they are horrible to him.
He is fabulous with the puppy.

So really the main problem is that he is not too keen on showing. It is a fact that some dogs just don't like it and may be he is one. Have you ever had a fear that he would bite outside the ring, is he a danger to people in the street?

The problem is that castration may not help and may even make matters worse so I think if you try the new chemical castration that is due out any moment now it may be a good idea just to see if it does help.

With his other problems you may find a master collar would help, needs for you to think through its use and timing in important but I think it may well help with the barking and the marking. It could be the new pup has thrown him a bit and you perhaps need to take his training back to the beginning and threat both him and the pup as puppies.

If all else fails you may have to take him out of the ring for a while to allow him to settle down and then try again, if you castrate you may as well forget the showing so perhaps it is best to hang on to his jewels as long as you can and hope you can work through the problem.

I'll tell everybody how the implantation goes as Rjj is due to have one anyday now, I don't want him castrated as I intend to have Jessie spayed eith after a litter or if we cannot get her to come in season than I will have her spayed without her having a litter. My thoughts are that if she did have a season & Rjj did mate her(not very likely as she is checked daily)he would not get her in whelp before I have their hips done. there pedigrees are compatible, but I would prefer a rough coated ISDS dog who is DNA/Eye tested/hip scored for her

What about doing some obedience with him to keep his mind engaged, it can work wonders with dogs that are naughty on the table

I will let you know how he gets on, and maybe going back to basics is a good idea, must confess didn't really appreciate how good he was compared to puppy. Still too much maleness but a a darling too.
Perhaps it is to do with the showing aspect, but that is far from regular the JH training is, or rather was most weeks though. So maybe the break will do him good (or quitting altogether).

I have to say, his behaviour sounds anxiety based to me... reactive barking at things (?? like noise outside, windowcleaners, other dogs barking, someone walking past etc?).. weeing over the pups wee definately screams to me 'i worry, i have to keep my presence noticed or or or.... '

Id try the implant for definately (really interested in your experiences with that Moonmaiden!!)..

I would try clicker training him to increase his confidence in himself and in everyone who handles him.

Anxious, nervy terriers do not slink away and curl up usually, they take on the world and give it what for and his behaviour screams 'help' and not 'im a MAN' (more 'im a mouse!').

I though clicker training would help too, if the OP can find a showing trainer all to the good as they understand what is required.

this new implant sounds like the answer to my dogs problem.
At the moment he is almost two and has just discovered that he is male!! and starting to play up in the open show rings (when female and male dogs are in together).
i would be interested to know how you get on if this is done.

There is a recent thread which might help you that I started on Boys fighting.  We had been recommended Tardek but it seemed to me to be just as good to go with the implant as neutering is the last resort since we also show.  Like Moonmaiden we are waiting for it to arrive at the vets.

Today was day 4 and 'show day'. He was a little better, I had to show the teeth (not well) as he was being a pain....but the judge was a lovely lady (Jean Lanning) who seemed to see right through him! She recons he needs persitent table work, and could see he was not really an aggresive or bad dog.

Update on Superlorin-it's now available @ the vet's suppliers so is on order-this shoul dbe the same for all vets-Virbac haven't sent any info to the vets though yet
