I know they are rare, but are there any breeders in the uk? Or anyway of getting one from Canada/USA?

I'm prepared to wait for a year!!!

Think they are a designed dog developed in the USA from larger spitz breeds. Don't think they are recognised by and of the worlds Kennel Clubs or Associations so I doubt any have been imported except as family pets. Could be wrong and probably are but if there are any in the UK I would think an internet search would be the way to go.

There are breeders in UK (have seen adverts in teh canien weekly annuals), and you would have to put a pup through Quarantine or go through PET Passport procedure (if the country is eligible) which would mean a pup would be a minimum of 10 months before it could be imported.

LOL Barbara what are weekly annuals? But good on you for knowing they are bred here, know about them but never seen one, from pictures they look a bit like shelties with prick ears and curled tails. Have you seen one in the fur so to speak.

Well I have googled them and found various us sites and also the mentioned UK one and have emailed them!

What it is, we both love huskies, i think they are beautiful. But I would prefer a smaller dog because we don't live in a large house. Its not small at all, we have a large open space under the stairs that would be warm in the winter, cool in the summer. By open I mean no doors, and its next to the kitchen.. Basically its a dog bedroom in the making.

I'm prepared to wait for a year till I can find the dog that is perfect for us but we have both fallen in love with the AKK as it is around 15 inches high and stunning. Then when we've moved to a larger house we would love to get a husky!

We live in Harrogate, which in the centre is a large large large expanse of lovely green public land perfect for dogs to frolic.

Hi When I was looking to get my first dog around 7 years ago I saw this breed and really liked the look of them and went to meet a couple in the flesh, they were fine but I decided against them in the end as I really wanted to show and they are not KC recognised. Since then I have met a couple of others and their temperaments were questionable, very highly strung and I have heard lots of people say the temperaments of most are iffy. So I would ensure that you meet both parents and ensure that they have been bred responsibly and socialisation started asap. Good Luck with your search!

If you like spitz have you looked at the Shiba, Japanese Spitz, German Spitz all under 15" or the Keeshond at 18". Think they would be easier to acquire although you may have to wait at least a year for some of them it depends on how long the breeders waiting list is. It may be that none of them suit I suppose it depends on what it is that appeals to you. Had until you posted only seen one photo and that dog was long haired like a Malamute but now you have interested me in looking for them I can only find smooth coated ones. It seems they come in different sizes the Mini being the one at 15"

I've only met a couple of AKKs and they aren't at all like siberians as far as temperament is concerned. As anworth said temperaments can be questionable so you have make sure they are well socialised as pups. They are a guarding breed, whereas sibes have no guarding instinct whatsoever.

Well The thing is Graeme doesn't really like the look of Shiba Unas, he adores Huskys, its just at the moment I think they'd be too big. I lOVE jack russells but he thinks they'd be too small..

hey, i know of two breeders in uk.
firstly there is jannet holland (who is the one who set up the web site the alaskan kleekai assosiation of GB) i have not personally met jannet but i know she has both the long haird and short and has all three size.
       toy:  upto and including 13''
minature: over 13'' and upto and including 15''
standard: over 15'' and upto and including 17'' (im not sure if this last one has now been changed to upto 18'', seem to be different from different sorces)

and there is also the wonderfull michael and mahari lynch who own the ''Highlandks''
this is where i got my little boy from, the are near sterling in scotland (which is not exactly local as i live near london) but i went to see them before i agreed to get a pup from them and they have three kleekais, one standard dog, one standard bitch, and one minature bitch.
the thing i liked about them was the fact that the dogs whrere first and formost valued family pets and where very well trained, no jumping up, not overly vocal and def no signs of aggression or shyness just really happy dogs.
my boy came from there standard boy and minature girl, so i was lucky to get to meet mum and dad together :-)
i think they also get studs in from jannet.
i could not fault them in any way, they are lovely people who love there dogs dearly and are very responable breeders (as in having contract to have the pups back rather than them going to rescue shelters and not letting just anyone have a pup)

i hope this help you, they are a fantastic breed who are so loving and playfull not to mention beautiful! my little boy kaskae is 11 months now :-D
1 dog, 1 cat, 2 snakes and still want more, need a bigger house!

Watched that Designer Dogs programme yesterday and they really put me off them, although I was never that keen before, yappy and they said that they are extremely hard to train.  I would think not for the fainthearted.
My dogs aren't my whole life, but my life wouldn't be whole without them. 05/01/08 11 stone 12 lbs
