In what context was the question asked, Kathy? Did the person asking want to know whether a dog was actually capable of mating with his daughter (yes), or whether a father/daughter mating is considered normal practice (in general, no).

If you could explain what the person who asked you was getting at, I'll be able to help better.

yeah thanks...........the dog has just had pups but wanted to know if they kept a female they could breed with the sire

Unless they know the genetic background of the sire (and the dam of the puppy they keep) inside out, they'd be stupid if they did. This breeding method exposes the genetic faults that are being carried but not evident, and any resulting litter could be genetically disastrous, resulting (in the worst case scenario) of the entire litter having to be put to sleep.

If they keep a bitch puppy they'd be far better to have the sire castrated or kennelled well away from the bitch when she's in season.

Although experienced breeders may decide that to breed back into a line with a close relative, usually sire x granddaughter or G. G. Daughter it does require a deep knowledge of the lines and a clarity of thought that they are well aware of why they are doing this risky mating.

In the case here is seems that it is just because they can and is not in anyway to be recommended.

Although 1/2 sister to 1/2 brother or daughter to grandsire etc is done occasionally father to daughter is not a usual mating.
To keep a pup with this intention is not a good idea...both dogs would need to be OUTSTANDING specimans with no genetic problems in the pedigrees.
I'm afraid if the breeder needs to ask this question they don't have the knowledge to do this kind of close breeding

I was talking to a doctor friend of mine a few months ago, and mentioned that my bitch was staying with my friend because she was in season, to keep her away from my entire male. He said to me " but I thought your dog and bitch were related? Surely they wouldnt mate with one of their relations!"     I told him that I didnt think dogs were aware of the law of incest!

i am in no way even close to being an expert in breeding but even i could awnser that one i had a phone call off someone inquiring about my litter the other day and he asked if he could buy 2 i knew what was coming next anyway he wanted them to breed them together he then went on to ask if i would take £400 for the pair £150 less than what it would be you can imagine my response i also asked if he was in the habbit of inbreeding and my litter will NOT be sold to anyone who has any intention of breeding i wwas gobbsmacked to say the least

i know it may work but to me its like saying, human, father and daughter, although its been known lol, its just my soft hearted oppinion i couldnt,

Cheeky b*****. The intention to inbreed aside, I would refuse point blank to go on and sell a puppy to anyone that made an offer after knowing the price, even if my refusal to take an offer made them offer the full price, they wouldn't get one. Grrrrrr.
