Did any of you have a fav childhood pet?

Mine was my dog called Dino.

When my Mum was having my Sister everyone kept asking me if i wanted a Sister or a brother and i said " a dog " so my step Dad went and got me one.
Not a great time to get a puppy i know but how i loved that dog.
He was almost one when we got him and i was nearly 5 and we had to have him PTS  when i was 20.
It broke the familys heart but it was all we could do for him.
He was a collie / gsd cross and was really only my dog.
We went everywhere together and i still miss him to this day.

I was not allowed a dog when I was a child, despite all the letters I used to write to my parents pleading for me to have a dog! And I used to write to Father Christmas, no toys wanted just a dog!

So my parents let me have Rabbits and Guinea Pigs, my fav rabbit was called Bunti, she was a lopped earred agouti, she was my best friend and let me do anything to her, groom, rub her tummy etc! She used to growl at everyone else that came near her!
My Guinea pig was called Charlie, he was an Albeano (sp) long haired Parovean (sp) white fur, black nose, feet and ears!

We had a family cat aswell, again she was my best friend too, had her from a kitten, our neighbours cat had the kittens and the owners was going to 'drown' the litter but thankfully my parents said they would help to find homes for them and we kept one!
Her name was Tid, because she used to 'Tiddle' everywhere!  she was a black and white moggie, she lived to a good age of 17 years, I still miss her really, she as a funny thing, hated my sister for some reason! I could walk passed my cat while she sat on the staircase, but if my sister tried to walk passed she would swipe her with her claws!!

We had a lovely cat called Smartie. Got when he was only 5-6 weeks old as his mum had been run over. He was beautiful and had a ginger sister called Sally. Unfortunately Sally was stolen and i dont rememeber her, but smartie lived to a ripe old age. You could literally do anything to him-i remember putting him on the table many a time and pretending to examine him (as i wanted to be a vet as a child) and he would just let you do it. He was full of character and personality and definately the best cat i have ever met.

We had cats when I was young, the first one I can't remember her name but I remember her bringing a live adder and dropping it on the front door step as a present.  She disappeared a couple of days later, we suspect she had found another adder and she was bitten (we lived near an area where adders were quite common).  Other cats were Polly who died soon after giving birth to Smokey who we had for 14 years, we also kept one of her kittens Timmy who died (PTS) a couple of weeks after Smokey aged 13.

When I was 14 we got our first dog a Springer call Sheppy who was totally mad who died aged 8 becuase of a heart problem.

Our Rough Collies were there from the day I was born so obviously my favourite and most loved animals, but as a young child I had a guinea-pig and a mouse whom I actually owned and cared for myself.  I used to take my mouse for country walks in my pocket and my guinea-pig who I absolultely loved, he came with me everywhere, when we went for walks around our village this guinea-pig was carried around in my arms or on my shoulder like a parrot, he was well known in my village, he would come everywhere with me, quite bizzare now I think about it but my mother never minded me carrying my animals around with me. They spent more time out of their cages than in them.

My guinea-pig was 6 years old when we went on holiday one year, he stayed with my grandmother whilst I was gone and the worst happened.... he died I thought he had died pining for me as we were always together and I cried for so long at his demise, I was always worried after that at the thought of leaving animals when we went on holiday, not too bad with the Collies as they were paired up and I knew they were ok together, but I've never since had single small animals, I have to buy everything in at least pairs, and my girl only goes to family where I know she has their dogs for company.    

Scared for life!!! 

We had a lovely red and white boxer called puddy, pud's was so loving and so great with us kids, and Sasha and Katie also boxers (was a bit younger). we also had a mongrel called Bess she was such a gentle old soul, They were all such special dogs. RIP my friends xx

My first ever dog was Suzie, a Pomeranian.  When my brother was ill and in hospital for quite a while I lived with a few different people.  My brother had his own Rough Collie King so due to me being a good girl!!  my parents said that I could have a dog of my own.  At the time I wanted a Yorkshire Terrier but couldn't get one from anywhere.  My mum said that they were common and when she saw an advert for a Pom we went to see her.  She was a fantastic dog but died too young she was only 9.  She was from a well known kennel, unfortunately we never got her papers as we were the third owners in her short life but she was the best Pom ever. 

I wasn't allowed a dog, my Mum thought they were dirty.  (Years later when I had my own place, she would ask "Why are you having another dog?"  The answer - BECAUSE I CAN!  So I had a pet hen called Jane.  No wonder I grew up confused, I assumed all kids had a chicken that came when it was called!

I got a wee terrier cross we called Lassie as I started school.  She was there for all my childhood. we took her to Germany when my father got posted there and she survived 6mths in quarantine, even although she had never been away from us in 13yrs, she was a great wee dog and lived till she was 18yrs old. I fill up thinking about her.

I wasn't allowed a dog either so walked everyone elses in the village, we did have a lovely cat called Tigger I walked some wonderful dogs and became quite well known in my village for doing so. My OH had a dog called Lassie, a cross between a Border and a Rough Collie. She lived until she was 19!

I had a gorgeous black cocker spaniel called Bess. 

Also 2 pigs called Honey and Pig.

gerbil called Percy and A guinea pig called Widgie.

Oh and the love of my life,  my little arab x New Forest pony called Dusty

I wasn't allowed any pets of any kind as a child ...................but kind of adopted some dogs belonging to a lady who lived a 100yrds away when I was 10 or so and spent the next 10 years helping her look after them (she had 10 Pointers) and going to shows with her etc! ......now I have 2 Dogs (will have more soon!) 2 cats and 2 rabbits......making up for a lost childhood LOL

When I was 4 my sister got two kittens, Smoke and Flame, run-of-the-mill tabby moggies from her then-bf's cat.  Flame was PTS in 2001 because of cancer; Smoke was PTS (far too late ) in Oct 2006 due to renal failure.  She was 20, my ancient little cat

My other cat arrived under the car as a 5 month old 11 years ago, she was a character - tiny little thing with a kink in her tail (we think it had been broken at some point), a fiery nature (if you stopped fussing her she would grab your hand and bite it till you carried on!) and gorgeous soft tabby fur.  She was PTS in 2006, the day before I moved out of my childhood home she also had renal failure but unlike Smoke, who had it for years, Whisp's was acute and she went from healthy to gone in 2 weeks.

My first dog was Opie, a springer X irish water spaniel (think all-over hairy springer with a rat tail!); she came home after her owners were going to have her PTS because they didn't want to bother with her any more.  She was 8 at the time, as was I - luckily, my sister worked in the kennels that she spent most of her life in so she heard first, and home Opie came.  SHe lived to 15, and was PTS when bone cancer - which we had no idea was there - broke her leg one night.

I also had two hamsters - Nibbler and Cufacud (cute, fat and cuddly ).  Years later I progressed to the menagerie - rats, millipedes, mice and fish, and now I have the 4 dogs, 16 rats, something like 300 millipedes (could easily be more) and the fish.

I would so, so dearly love cats again - I miss my girls horribly, but I know very well that Soli would kill them if she got hold of them.

we had cassie, our first bullmastiff, who was in residence when i was first brought home from the hosp lol. when i was about 1 or 2 she was mated and we kept a boy pup from the litter, Chadwick. Chad was my special boy as we grew up together, there is a very cute picture of us running about both as toddlers lol (he's about 4 months) at aviemore. we had chad till he was 14 (not bad for a bully) and had to get him pts as he'd started fitting, hips were going etc. generally he'd hit old age. he used to lie on his side and put his 'arms' round you for a cuddle. he also had his special chair. one of dads friends from work came round one day and sat in it. chad sat and stared at him for ages. when the guy asked why he was told he wanted his chair. the guy laughed and started teasing chad who eventually decided he was sitting in his chair, despite the guy sitting in it lol. he was a very patient dog, especially with kids. he was staying with my gran one day (can;t recall why) and my auntie and then baby cousin were up from england. they (more irresponsibly to be honest) were nattering away and not looking at what the baby was doing. then my auntie screamed, gran looked round and the baby had her head in chads mouth! she was having great fun examining his jowls and teeth. any other dog and this could have been awful but he sat there looking put upon but docile till she was finished. he also used to pull my sledge when it snowed

I quite often reminisce about my childhood dogs.

The first one was a Chow Chow called Yogi when I was 3yrs. He was less than friendly but still the same I loved him even though I had several trips to casualty for Tetanus injections because of my tormenting (totally my own fault).

The second was the love of my life called Lady -  X Collie/GSD, although slightly mental she was my confidant and very best friend She should have been called 'Shadow' because that is what she was to me and I will always remember her for her love and loyalty, somehow I didn't train her, she trained me which suited us both fine.

I wont easily forget Skipper our psycho s/h fox terrier - the whole neighbourhood probably still remember him too. I had to seperate him and my brothers pet ferret once! I never for a minute thought I might get bitten (which I didnt luckily) but the ferret (Stinker) died shortly after. As a teenager I had Max, my dobermann who I adored and still miss. He was the softest dobe Ive ever known though he wasnt keen on men and spent all his time with me and my mum. He used to sleep with me, full length in bed beside me under the covers, his head on the pillow. Sometimes he'd even take himself off to bed and sleep that way too. He was just the best! When he died (aged only 7) I thought my heart was going to break.

We had wall-to-wall dogs at home when I was young so I had my rat called Frances for my very own.Then I started breeding hamsters to sell to friends and school mates.
Mum bought me my own dog called Happy but he was a grumpy little devil.
My Auntie had a Border collie called Kelly and I adored him. I built him an agility course and practiced all the time. Unfortunately it was so long ago dog agility hadn't been invented, so I had no one to compete against On my way from school Kelly would wait at the window and when he saw me he'd open the window and jump out to meet me (ground floor thankfully!)

I often think about my childhood dog...
I used to see him every morning on my way to school... this apparently cross lab?? But he was black and white
I loved him from the first second i seen him, i used to mope everytime i saw him there
THEN it was my birthday... i was 14
My dad said... come on Donna lets go for a walk... we went to the pet shop and bought him. I called him PEP
He was my life
He was the one i who's fur i cried into... i told my secrets too...
I miss him even now
He's been at the bridge now for 11 years... time heals but memories dont fade
Although ive had dogs since... they wont be pep just as he wont be charlie or murphy...

on the farm we had two huge gsd, one a male named dog the other a bitch named lass, dad would not have collies work our farm gsd or nothing he used to say,
we had pigs, and sheep and goats, rabbits,hens, etc,
but we loved it when we used to come home from school and in front of the aga there was a baby orphan, normally a lamb and that would grow up with us, till mum said it was now to big to live in the kitchen with us, and if we had 4 or more they where definatly in the barn, we used to name them every year, and even when they where turned out later on with the others they would be the first to charge down the field to us when we hung over the gate shouting on them, but i remember one year my dad came home with a bullock very young, he had found him at the top of one of fields dad was no soft touch so it took a lot of persuading him to keep this little scrap dad said animals had to earn their keep, we kept this young lad and he was a one in a million, so gentle and kind we used to his field every morning before we went to school to see him and feed him and when we came in from school my brother who was supposed to be doing chores used to sneak off to find him, dad used to tell us never to go into the field alone with goliath as he was dangerous, i mean the sheer size of him he could of killed any of us,just by using his weight as he got older, but he new my brother would be comming along the path whatever the weather with his apple and you could hear this huge beastie roaring for my brother and then we knew when he was eating the apple as quite, he had the ring through his nose and my dad and brother would go up the field to bring him down but my brother was the only one that could lead goliath without him playing up, so that was my 6 year old brothers job, goliath was a gentle lamb around my brother , and my brother loved that huge beast  he even to this day has a pic of him sitting on top of goliath and one of goliath getting his ears tickled by him, if we needed to get the vet around to see goliath my dad had been known to seek my brother out of school to calm goliath down as they had tried once with my brother there to tend to a wound and that as they say is another story all in it self

My bestest was Sweepie she was a scottie and I was about 6 we had her until she was 8 and a rat bit her and she got jaundice and died. Boarding school then intervened and I didnt have another dog until 1982 when I married my son's father. They lasted until both boys were about 13 & 11. We then stopped until one of us was at home full time.
Whistler is my first owned dog and I hope he and I will last as long as possible, OH and I decided that as I am in the office all day we could have a dog and bring him to work. we could not decide what typr of dog so i wanted a cocker (Whistler) he wanted a border collie (Jake) so again we had two dogs, that was 12 months ago.

So far so good, cant imagine life without them.

My son's had hamsters but not much else really.

My mother and father had a black poodle called Suki when I was born.  They bought her because my sister (who was 7 years older than me) was frightened of dogs and used to run across the road to get away from them.  She was called Suki as my sister wanted to call her "Polly put the kettle on".  In the nursery rhyme "Suki" took it off again.  She was a wonderful dog and used to come onto my bed every night until I fell asleep and then do the same to my sister and finally end up on my parents bed.

We moved to Rome when I was 9 and Suki went to live with my grandmother.  Unfortunately, a bird flew into a bedroom window whilst Suki was asleep and she got very frightened and jumped off the bed and broke her shoulder and had to be put to sleep.  She was 13.

We didn't get another dog until I was about 13 and again it was a poodle, an apricot one this time.  He was called Nada (nothing in Spanish) and was absolutely gorgeous.  We all loved him to bits and he was such a character.  He had a stroke one night and had to be put to sleep when he was 11.

I always wanted a cat but my mother hated them.  I also wanted a budgie and hamsters but wasn't allowed those either.

As soon as I left home I bought a budgie and then when I went to live with my husband we got two kittens and a hamsters.  One of the cats got run over when he was 18 months but the other lived to 8 and then got cancer. 

At one point we had 8 pets (as well as 2 children).  We had 2 cats, 3 guinea pigs, 1 parrot, 1 dog, 1 leopard gecko and 1 fish so I was really making up for lost time.

We only have the gecko, cats and dog now as the others have died.

I love all my pets to bits

My first pet was a TT called Kizzy.  She was a terrible show specimen but I loved her dearly.  She had a tight curly coat (wonder if that's why I love the Spanish) & she was black.  She used to smile (a really horrific smile).  She had the most gorgeous pup called Sinbad who went to live in Germany (a very successful show dog funnily enough )

We also had tortoises, who laid eggs & we managed to hatch them.  Mum gave them away when they were 4 years old, sadly they all died as people didn't know how to look after young tortoises in those days. 

My first pet was a dog named Cuda, but I dont much remember him really.  But apparently he was a nice dog, and was a big cuddler!  My sister and I were just babies. Everyone yelled at mom, scolding her for having a Doberman around babies, but he was gentle as a bunny.

I have since had many pets, dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, fish, etc.  But the one that will have a lasting impression ALWAYS will be my Joy, a English Springer Spaniel.  I got her when I was in grade school, the end of grade 3 (like the day after, so I will always say Grade 4) and I remember being so happy, that in show and tell, in school, I had my mom bring her into the class, as my show and tell first week of school in Sept. 

She was the dog that got me through the bullying, the insecurities, the heartbreaks, everything!!!  Now that she is gone, its a bit harder to deal with things, since I am so used to having her there to whisper in her ears about things.

Even when she was older, it was like the first day I got her.  I loved her to bits!!!!!  Her "novelty" never wore off!

He was our tomcat who has the most gorgeous shade of blue/grey I had ever seen on a cat and a big white fluffy chest and belly and a bright pink nose with these huge green eyes, he was sooooo gorgeous when ever we took him to the vets everyone came over and had a stroke, he knew he was a hunk too lol
I got him off my neighbour, she asked me if I wanted a kitten but id have to ask my dad, i ran in excited but my dad was alsleep, so I ran back out and told my neighbour my dad said yes! lol
He came with the kitten a few days later, my dad bless him still took it but was shell shocked when our neighbour came round saying this is your kitten you wanted lol he said 'what bl@@dy kitten!!'' I realise now what a bad thing I did as he didnt have litter trays, food, toys or anything as he didnt know lol Bless dad for still letting me have him lol I was an innocent 4 years old and not even dad could refuse  my eyes and scattys kitten eyes pleading at him on the doorstep lol 

Scatty suffered a bone tumour to his jaw which made his face look like a lion with the big chin, but he battled it for 3 years, he was given sterioids and all sorts by the vets but he couldnt walk straight the poor boy as he was so dosed up, we thought this is no way for him to live his final years so we took him off all meds and let nature run its course......he stayed with us for another 3 years before he was hit by a hit and run driver...who knows he may still be with us now if he hadnt been hit, I never made it to the vets in time even tho the poeple that found him took him to our local vet and found us as soon as they could, his heart had just stopped before we got there, I was devasted beyond consoling and cried for days and days.
He was 18 when he died and Id had him since 4 years old, Im crying now as I wrote this as he's only been gone a few years but I miss him so much and his miows in the morning to let him in and how he used to purr so loud you couldnt hear the telly! lol

I will never forgive the coward who hit him and drove off to leave him in the road, but I will always remember my boy forever and no cat will ever replace him.
Hes now buried in our back garden with a headstone made of sticks and wood and even Mitz was there at his burial and she has never ever tried to dig up anything, she loved him so much too and when he left us she was so distraught, checking where he used to lay, sniffing for him at the bottom of the stairs as she was only a pup when she met him and when he died, god I miss him.....
