Has anyone been scammed or had their details used to buy large purchases and if so what happened about reclaiming your money?

My boyfriend has just managed to get all his money back  a month later after afew phone calls and forms back and forth!  He got all his money back and all charges too as he went over drawn.

We did, somebody had used (cloned) our cards and bought £3800 worth of tickets (airline) we got the money back pretty quickly through the bank - Alliance & Leicester.

Natwest Fraud department has just rang me (I almost thought they were a scam at first) but apparently a large number of transactions have been made over the internet using my card and totalling over two grand!!!!! Im shocked but pleased theyve picked it up
Did anyone have any hassle getting the money returned to their account?

I had it many years ago with credit card cheques.  I had to report it to the police to get a crime reference number and then the bank refunded the money.  Fortunately it wasn't a lot of money.

My parents had this done to them, someone was subscribing to porn channels/mags, and been purchasing mobile phones. they did get the money back quite quick without too much fuss. it must be a awful thing to happen though.

We had about £3.000 taken out of our account last year over the space of 2 days. They were using our details on an online betting thing every 2 minutes. Luckily my husband went online to check the account and that was when he noticed it otherwise they would have got more. Luckily it was in America so we could prove that it wasn't us so we got all the money back pretty quickly.

This happened to me two years ago. My credit card company informed me that there had been some ''unusual activity'' on my credit card account.

Too right..........I'd seemingly bought about 30 different flights in rupees, with airlines that only operate within India. !!!! £2,600 in total. That's alot of rupees let me tell you.

Barclaycard were brilliant, we were not held liable for any of the fraudulent transactions. It took six months to sort it all out, but it was all OK in the end.

Just waiting for a new credit card at the moment for that very reason and it has happened before. This time the bank noticed something was wrong and stopped issuing approval for my card, the time before I noticed items on my card that had taken place when I was abroad, some of these transactions were also abroad but not where i was and others were at Oxford Uni where they were used to buy a £1000 worth of books.

Both times it caused me no problems apart from the inconvenience of having to have a new card.

Hi Lel, this happened to my parents last year. Someone cloned their card and took a total of £10,000 from their account! They were with Nat West and my mum said they were great about having the money returned. As you say they have a fraud department, this sort of thing happens more often than you think!! It was the same for my parents that Nat West rang them as they hadn't had a statement, and the money was taken over a number of days. I hope it all gets sorted soon!

Sometimes fraudsters pretend to be the bank telling you that someone has been using your account/card etc to get you to divulge security information. I regularly get emails telling me my internet banking has been suspended as I have entered incorrect passwords and to click on the link, had I not worked in Banking I would believe some of them.
Make sure you never divulge full security passwords etc to anyone as no Bank will ever ask for these in full.

I have been done three times. Once a guy in Manchester got a 42" plasma delievered to his home??? Doh caught that one. Second a trip to my son's uni meant a pee break in a services I drew £100 and lost via an easy jet flight £3500. in Italy!!!!. Last one about three weeks ago, I did a P&O trip, someone set up a Tescos account and brought loads of booze and had it delivered to my home. Pity was I was with a girl friend and my OH was at home so thats been sorted. All have resulted in money refunded but a delay with new cards and pins.
Honestly do not give out your numbers on the phone ever, be careful at motorway services and do not let anyone swipe your card in a resturant etc and walk off with the machine until you have pin coded it.
P&O are still considering the police report, but they have some one at Soton docks that is iffey...
Its a pain, but i also have an account now that sends me a report whenever anyone credit checks me. but it costs me £25 a quarter to have that done.

Yes thats why I originally thought the phone call was a scam. I wasnt aware that the fraud department would make contact  as they did and actually put the phone down half way through (Its an automated message to begin with). Then out of curiosity I checked the number and thought I'd ring them back- thank god I did or gawd knows how much more would have been taken til they next tried to make contact. In this case they didnt ask for any account details just my date of birth and then asked me about a number of transactions and the money involved. Some were genuine that i had paid for and some definately not.
I drive a lot with my job so always up and down the motorways using service stations but guess this is a lesson to take the money with me in future and to always use a trusted atm

Yes! my x husband only used to use his one credit card in the petrol station and some one spent £3000.00 on the card abroad. It took a while to prove he had not been abroad. His bank did refund the money and charges.
I was informed by my Bank this week end that if you ever pay by your credit card, phone or other wise and give your 3 number ID from the back of the card, They can with draw off the card at any time with out your permission. The Bank can't stop it, unless you cancel the card.
It is quite worring. You also have to chase the cash yourself to get it back, in most cases you don't.
I have just cancelled my card for this reason.

There is always some-one trying to spend some-one elses money!!

Yes, someone at my bank stole £2,000 of my money after I had been in to withdraw £200.  The bank said they had a signed slip which they then said was forged.  And then after I had a HUGE fight with them they gave me the money back and said it was "operator error" and refused to discuss all the forgery stuff.

Then I gave my bank details to Vodaphone so I could top up my phone via the net - a few weeks later I had all these direct debits for different phone companies on my bank statement - not me.  The bank refunded the money immediately but I had to cancel my card and try and sort it out with the phone companies myself.  Got two steps forward than nowhere so don't have a mobile anymore.

Dont worry about this.

I work for a well known bank within their fraud department, normally fraud activity will be refunded within 14 days.

You will have to sign a document as well before the fraud is refunded.

My advice is when ever you get a call from someone claiming to be your bank, either call the number on the back of your card, or only give partial security (ie ask them to tell you what year you were born and then you tell them the month)
