A friend of mine lost her dog very suddenly last week.  Obviously she's terribly upset and her adult son phoned me last night.  They are looking into the possibly of either a Great Dane or Irish Wolfhound puppy sometime in the future and wanted to know what health checks should be done, what kind of price a well bred puppy would be etc.  These breeds are totally unknown to me and I have tried looking on this site and others but haven't really found any useful information.  Are they are owners of these breeds on this site who can help?  Any phone numbers of people I can pass on?  Thanks for any help.

can only really suggest they contact the relevant breed club for each one

if they are interested in Deerhound (similar to IW but not as stocky) then let me know, can pass on info re health checks etc

good luck!

Thanks

I've found breed club details of wolfhounds but it's proving difficult for Great Danes.  Either the sites are american or under construction.

Price of a Dane will vary around colour - (what I would call) a decent fawn or blue seems to be around £800 at the moment. Brindles and blacks are likely to be cheaper. Harlequins could be anything really! Merles (mismarks) seem to sell well, so probably around the £700 even though they are mismarks. Not sure where the newly recognised mantles sit price-wise.

Health tests ... hmmm, not many. Some are hip and elbow scoring. Other issues to worry about are hearts and Wobblers. To be honest, probably the best advert is someone who still has oldies around the place.

Hi,
I have a friend who has Danes.
She is a vet and her eldest Dane is 14years old.
Can give you her number if you like???

Jonelle.

Yes please Jonelle.  That would be great.  14 years must be a fantastic age for such a large breed of dog.  What area of the country does your friend live?  We are in East Anglia.

I had a Great Dane when I was growing up. She was a fantastic dog, the sweetest nature you can imagine, she was just lovely. Short hairs that weave themselves into just about any fabric though. I'd love a Dane again one day.

A 14 year old Dane! That is a brilliant age :-) Our was about 10 I think when she went to the bridge.

My friend has Great Danes & hers usually reach double figures, she bought in a bitch(as a puppy)a few months before I got a collie puppy, they grew up together & were the best of friends-My friends Dane would try to carry my BC about even when they were grown up. Eerily they both went to the Bridge at almost the same time, just into their teens. I like to think they have managed to get their act together there & there are hundreds of Great Border Dollies running around waiting for me.
