Hi
I rescued a Belgian Shepard bitch who was a nightmare over her food bowl with my young son when she was eating. The way I calmed her was to put her dinner down obviously only the dog & myself in the kitchen and I would not make eye contact and do my dishes, I would throw small pieces of cheese or sausage down near her bowl but not moving from my spot as that can trigger them off. If she just ate the extra I would say good girl in a soft voice. All this takes a long time for the dog to trust you but eventually I could say her name and put the food into her bowl and she was good about it. I never did let my son go near her at all at feeding times or my other dog my bull terrier.
I would seriously get your mate to talk to her vet and find a dog behaviorist or maybe a good dog training book before the boxer gets any older as once he gets to be a big lad will not back down and fights will happen over everything. A local dog training class would be good for both housemates to take the dogs to together as well. Once you start basic obedience if things do get volatile its so much easier to get control of dogs that get arsey with each other.
Only truly at ease with four legged friends.
