Does anyone know a good site where I can look up the meaning of a surname, also where I can find out about colloquial north country words/sayings?
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam,
Oh goodie, a topic that's near and dear to my heart :D
Cyndi's List is a "bible" site for genealogists. She's collected all sorts of linkages and sorted them out over the last 8 or so years. Last count: over 144,000 world wide links. Some of these links are so specialized that you won't find them through google (go figure) confused Hope they help.

OK, despite everyones help, I am not having any luck in my quest! Therefore, can anyone from the Cheshire region tell me if they have ever heard of the expression "weretter"........meaning someone who complains or moans alot?
Thanks
Sam
By issysmum [gb] Date 25.07.02 07:44 GMT
YES - I've heard it in the context of my mum telling me to stop weretting!!

My parents have travelled all over the UK and come up with various sayings, most of which my Poole born and bred huby doesn't understand!!

AWWWWW you know mw so well!!!:-)
its just that I had a small wager that werretter was someone who complains alot, but the person in question didn't believe me & thought it to be a big wind-up. Now I can prove otherwise so dead chuffed!
As for the other matter......well.....so far so good(looks a bit coy at this point!)

Has anyone heard of the word "cusset"? It means difficult, awkward, contrary, etc.

I used it last night and Al had never heard it. Nor has anyone at work. Couldn't find it in search engines. Am I making this up????? confused
By Brainless (Moderator) [gb] Date 01.08.02 10:51 GMT

It was Loki I was talking about, so that would be right :D
By LongDog (***) [gb] Date 01.08.02 17:45 GMT
Whilst surfing came across this:-

Loki was one of the enemies of the Norse gods. He became a member of the Aesir (the gods) when Odin made Loki his blood brother. He was the god of fire, mischief, a trickster, and very cunning.

Is this the same Loki??

AKA Loki teller of lies ???

Yep --same dude. Still, I always liked Loki. Goody two shoes Thor never appealed to me ;-) :D BTW: Aesir is also known as Asgaard. :-) There's several variations on the stories and things don't always make sense up there in the dark northlands ;-)

I meant Loki the non-retrieving clumber spaniel. But hey. Whatever. :p
