Can anyone describe what a tick looks like

Unfortunately, there are several types of ticks....Most common are:
Dog Ticks -- Can grow very large .... Greenish Grey in color. Sickly grape resemblance.
Deer ticks ---small black type and harder to detect.

Ticks have a huge oval body in relation to their head and legs.

They are ticks by the way on mattie my oldest bitch they were on her face and two mustve fallen off but three attached so there was a mad panic after various advice I plumped for A) surgical spirit B) trying a red hot needle direct into the horrible things then I took them off found they were intact but Im scared now because i pulled one off yesterday before I realised what they were. will she be ok?
I cant see anymore Ive bathed her in flea shampoo and wiped her face with surgical spirit,any help advice will be appreciated she must have picked them up when I went to the kennels they have sheep there
The other dogs seem clear.

They apparantly prefer to go where the coat is thin though and this is why most common on ears, face and abdomen.

Its virtually impossible to get through matties coat its that thick so Im hoping there arent any they were on her head near her eyes and top ofher head do they go in carpets? etc do they hop from dog to dog sorry I now im a bit thick

Mattie front line is good ... seems to kill them off overnight and they fall off. I pulled one off my dog and she got a bit infected but is ok now ... just kept it clean.

Kassie got a tick on her about a week after we picked her up- luckily though it was on her eyebrow- and being a GSD she has tan eyebrows so we spotted it very early on;) I did a search on here and Sean got some really fine electricians pliars out and removed it. Not so sure I would have spotted it as easily had it been on the black though!

the other day we went out with BAnya and saw ticks walking up blades of grass to jump on to her!!!

I think dogs do often get them off accidentally when scrathing etc, although sometimes the head will remain in the skin for a while. I have never had problems but have heard it CAN cause infection.

Also of course Lyme Disease if you live in a susceptible area such as the New Forest....but dont panic as we don't!!!!

We have always lifted the tick slighty so as to make sure we can reach all of the mouthpart, and then dab lots of marg/butter all around. After a while/couple of days, the tick shrivels up and falls off.

I do the same thing but with vaseline, dogs don't tend to lick them so much. Has anyone else noticed that this seems to be a bad year for them, we have got loads off the dogs in the last few weeks, and just to add to the problems I now have a dusbin full of maggots Urghhhhhh Ingrid

Perhaps you can find a dr. that might want them. Apparently maggots are extremely useful for 'eating' infected/dead flesh around a serious wound, but not touching the healthy healing parts. Better than anything they can invent to do the same job. Yeah, I know, gross...but it's NATURAL and TRADITIONAL Medicine :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

The very thought makes my flesh crawl I have heard of that. Hopefully problem is now cured, bins were emptied this morning and I think I had got rid of most of them, just hope I don't see the binmen. Ingrid

my sister lives in germany were ticks are abound, she was told to use vasaline, smother the tick with this realy thickly make sure you seal the tick apparently they need air so when they try to serface, they cant take air and will fall off, takes a little time, sister say it defenitly works.regards tina.
