I do not routinely chip pups as Papillon pups are so tiny and that needle is so huge, I always recommend to new puppy owners that they do chip when puppy is 9 months to a year old, I used to chip early but after I had one boy I kept to show chipped at 3 months old he became permanently frightened of anyone touching his head and neck which obviously isnt so good when you want to show him, I think bigger puppies of other breeds can bear being chipped a bit better than the tinies can.

I have microchipped puppies at 10 wks of breeds as small as pomeranians, my own schipperkes, jack russells, pugs etc non of which have experienced such an issue after the procedure.

My last two litters were chipped at 5 & 7 weeks of age, the smallest being 4lbs, I keep the registration papers until the pups leave then register them with Petlog, I also put my home number on the papers as a second contact number, which I tell my new pup owners, they've all been happy with it.

I have a hand held scanner so scan the pup and show the owner they have the correct paperwork etc. and register the micro-chip number against their KC papers.

The litter that was chipped at 5 weeks I must confess I was a little worried about, as they were quite small (being from a litter of 9) but they were chipped, put back down with their siblings and continued playing as though nothing had happened.
Life is too short to worry about muddy pawprints.....
