The most effective things you can put down would need to be well away from any other animals who could get at it. You put it in the path of the ants and they take the "food" down into the nest and they are all poisoned. There are little box types or a liquid you put onto something flat. It takes several days, and the liquid one needs topping up daily and loses its effectiveness in the rain.

Hi
You can mix yeast and sugar together the ants take it back to the nest for the queen ant
An empty vessel makes the most noise.
My dad used to pour petrol down ant nest and then set fire to it, pretty drastic but always worked, we have major ant problems where we are (very sandy) and I have had them on organised marches through the house several times, I always use the little igloo vapona things that hold poison, end up building ramps for the ants into them though to make sure they go in !

We have always pured boiling water down them, that works too. Ingrid

I use boiling water too. Works for us.

Raid makes a "ant restaurant" little plastic domes where ants come to eat and take back to nest. I find putting a couple down, then a large patio tile on top of them works to keep the dogs out of the stuff. Amazing how quickly the stuff can work, too.

Nipon ant poison can be bought from general shops or the chemist. The worker ants take it back to the Queen. Ant powder also kills them. I sometimes pour salt into the nest. I think it kills the eggs.
