It's very addictive, and global. You'd be astonished what you walk past not knowing it's there!

im going to have a wee look tomorrow when walking the dog, says its in a medium sized box. so if i find it, i leave a note in the log book, and if i take anything i replace it with something of similar or more value? just had a look, theres quite a few around me, a few at the falkirk wheel, and surrounding areas. wish me luck for tomorrow!

Yep, that's the idea. And do it surreptitiously, so that you don't give away the location to passing strangers who might vandalise it. Good luck!

This sounds amazing- going to try and find one in my area! :-D
By newfiedreams (***) [gb] Date 28.12.08 23:20 GMT
JG, do you 'know' what it is you're hunting or finding...or do you just take along some bits and bobs to leave? I just wonder how you assess the 'value' of something, without having to spend a fortune? Cheers, Dawn x

wow ive just worked out where it was and its accross the road from my house!!! i nipped out there quickly with the dogs! :-) no cars, so didnt look too much of a weirdo hanging around under a lamppost routing through the bushes!!! :-)

>do you just take along some bits and bobs to leave?

I have a small backpack with spare batteries (for the GPS) and a few odd bits and bobs; the free gifts from cereals, a little packet of tissues, badges, keyrings; biros - that sort of stuff. The rules are that no food should be left (attracts vermin), no alcohol (it's a family hobby and children take part) and nothing illegal. And you don't have to take anything; but if you do take something it's good etiquette to leave something as well. Some caches are very small - 35mm film canisters for example - with only room for paper to sign your name, and others can be quite large, like a sandwich box.

You log your finds (and fail-to-finds) on the geocaching website and there you go!

There is one near me! :-)

Do you have to have a GPS device? Or can you do it without?

I think my littlies would love to do this.
By Snoop (***) [gb] Date 29.12.08 12:16 GMT
Ok, have been reading up and it seems that geocaching would be difficult without a GPS, lol! :-D
By Jeangenie (*****) [gb] Date 29.12.08 22:37 GMT
Some caches can be found without a GPS using the hints, local knowledge and good luck - but others, particularly the multis, there's no chance!

how much does a GPS cost roughly?

This sort is perfectly adequate for geocaching.

Just had our first find....and I think this could be addictive! :-)
Had my youngest two children with me who thought the whole thing was an exciting adventure - even though we didn't actually take any treasure. I'm going to stock up on trinkets so they can take some treasure next time. We're hoping to do another one tomorrow.
By Jeangenie (*****) [gb] Date 01.01.09 13:24 GMT
Excellent! Glad you're enjoying it. :-) It's a great way of getting children (and dogs) out and about. Real family fun. :-)

Looks very interesting, i'm going to see what i can locate a GPS, have a feeling it'll end up a waste of money for me. I know what i am like unless Argos do a very good discount - (cackles with the rest of them).
